I'm just thinking too much again. So here's the question - I've messed with popcorn, it's great for baiting. This morning I was havin' some hot breakfast and made a bit too much. So, I was just wonderin' has anyone tried oatmeal as opposed to oats for baiting. Light carrying, add the feed molasses and I'm sure the stuff would puff up like crazy if it were left for a 1/2 a day. Judging from my breakfast this morning, I'm thinking the 2.5kg bag should come pretty close to filling a 5 gallon pale once it's wet down.

Thoughts? Anyone?

that'll get awfully expensive. Sometimes we go through a 45 gallon drum of oats every couple days.

Since one bait was average 20 bears a day, it didn't matter on how bit the hole was..

If a bait's that busy, just put in lick holes. The bears roll the barrel around and lick the stuff that oozes out. Baiting, not feeding

BTW, I spoke to a friend, rolled feed oats from UFA & promolas. Fill the barrel 1/2 full, he figured it would chub up really good.

Hey Russ , You want a cheap way to bait bears, I use Beef Fattener about $13.00 for a 60 pound bag and use about 4 shopping bags a week (along with a 40lb bag of Apples). It is a mixture of Oats, Grain, Molasses and Not sure what else but the Black bears here in Nova Scotia LOVE IT! Of course if you have 20 bears a day hitting it it might not be so Cheap !

you have to have a bill of lading from the meat processor / butcher to do this. Big PITA. Dog food, oats, popcorn & molasses don't require this.

Bill of lading????????????
I have baited for close to 20 years and have never had this, even been checked by wardens.
So why do you say you need this????/

We got our baits out on saturday and two buddies went up today to put out some grease and to chain up the last treestand. They figure the one bait has been hit already, all the old herring from fishing and other smelly things were gone from the one bait (that could have been birds or anything though), popcorn on the ground and they said it looked like claw marks on the upper part of the barrel. I was thinking skunk at first but it very well could be a small bear on it. The other bait wasnt hit at all yet.

What is the purpose of a bill of lading?????????
And why is it needed?????

to prove that your meat was federally inspected.

A friend tells me I'm being too anal. Something about reverse onus, didn't quite understand what he meant.

Is the bill of lading for meat scrapes obtained from a butcher for the purpose of baiting bears a provincial thing? First I have heard of this, I know I never have asked for or been given one, will check with some of my fellow bear hunters in New Brunswick.

definitely a provincial requirement. It's there to prevent the spread of livestock diseases into wildlife.

From the Alberta Hunting Regs...

Hunters are reminded that Alberta's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Livestock Diseases Act and the Public Health Act apply to baiting situations. Any livestock dying other than through proper slaughter for human consumption must be disposed of in prescribed ways and may not be used for baiting bears. Containers or wrappings made of paper, cardboard, plastic or other materials should not be left at bait sites. For the safety of others, baits should not be placed near active work sites (e.g., tree planting locations) and all bait sites must be cleaned immediately after the bear season.

Hey Guys/Gals you got to remember that your in Different Provinces. Nova Scotia does NOT require the Bill of Lading, By the Sounds of it New Brunswick Does NOT need the Bill of Lading . However, it sounds like Albert DOES require this Bill of Lading. In Nova Scotia if I hunt Bear in the special season for bowhunting prior to general open season for deer then I have to register the bait site with DNR and have to have written consent from the Land Owner which must be carry on my person when hunting the site. I must clean the bait site immediately after the close of the bear season. This is not a problem when you use Beef fattener and Apples (The bears have already cleaned it for me) Barrells , Bones, etc must be removed.

Ya Russ oatmeal does work great and mixed with feed mollassis it is good. Even soaked with old fryer grease is awsome too. I used to use this as bait but when running a dozen baits or more it is a little on the pricie side.I now stick to popcorn soaked in fryer graese. Use enough greese to get the popcorn to stick alittle in the drum with an inch and a half hole works good, don't smell too awful, and easy on the wallet. Oh ya thanks for the info on B/L for butcher scraps. I'll have to cheak into that a little deeper.:)

I'm going out west this weekend and then up to the in-laws next weekend, he's seeing tracks around the yard. I'm going to take a predator call and a climber. Funny, I don't wanna be on the ground for the p-calling .

I got a call from my Mother in law last night. She wants me to come up to the farm near Westlock this weekend to deal with a bear that is frequenting their yard. I am heading up to Northern Sask though to sit on the baits. I think the neighbour is going to take care of the yard bear.
