View Full Version : Which string for my Martin

:? I'm confused about something that I'm seeing in my bow since the riser and string set was changed. I broke the riser on my 2001 Phantom and Martin replaced it with a 2004 riser (at no charge, Thanks Martin!). :-)
The confusion is whether we put the correct string on when we replaced the riser. We had ordered the string to 2001 specs, which is a 3/4" longer string. My draw weight has dropped by over 5 lbs when set at max and my arrows really seem to be a lot slower, I've had to spread my pins quite a bit from before.

Does 3/4" make this much difference in performance? My cam also seems to be out of position on the limb compared to where it was before. Should we have gone with the string specs for the 2004 riser? :?:

I can live with the bow this way if I have to, I would just like to know what has caused this. My draw weight was 67 - 68 lbs fully cranked and it is only 60 lbs now. i am going to try and run it through a chrono when I can, with my big 2315's and 125 grain tips, plus all of the string garbage I was getting about 225 fps before, so it should tell me if I'm imagining the drop in speed when I can get it tested again.

Any info or opinions are appreciated. :!:

Thanks,
Grizzly

Hey Grizzly, I know Martin changed a bunch of string specs in mid stream this year.

They may have sent either a new or an old string.

I would goto the martin web site , I believe the new tec specs have been fully updated.

And if you liked the way your bow felt before get a hold of scotty or trev and they can put you in touch with one of our string sponsors, they make you a string to whatever spec you send them.

Thanks Sniper.

The string screwup is probably my own fault, when my dealer was getting in the new riser we ordered the new string from Allan Andreas without even thinking about whether we should have gone to new specs. Martin didn't supply me with a string or a recommendation for which one to use so we just went with the old specs.

Do you think 3/4" is enough to cause these problems? I don't see how the draw weight should change from string length but I thought I read somewhere that it can.

Looks like you guys had a good time at the Medicine Hat shoot, wish I could have made it down to that one.

Thanks again,
Grizzly

3/4 of an inch ia alot in the string world.

I would get the right string on it and if the problem dont go away send me a PM , I'll see if we cant fix ya up.

If the cams are the same and the axle to axle length is the same the string should be the same.If the new riser is longer then you have a problem.Did you add twist to the string? check brace height? both the string and cable need to be twisted to set the cams and the brace height. You should not loose any weight if they are right.
Often stringmakers send the wrong length too.

:-) The problem is apparently resolved. My dealer and his supplier spent a couple days playing phone tag and finally came to the conclusion that the new riser isn't compatible with the old limbs and cams. They found a new 2001 riser for me and it is on its way to me now. That should work out real good since my new string and cable are made to the 2001 specs so my bow should be as good as new again, new riser, new axles and bushings and a custom string. Can't wait to finally get this baby shooting again, I thought I was imagining things with the bow.

Thanks for the replies on the post! :!:

When they fix it this time check the axle/axle length, brace height and weight before you leave the shop. The shop never should have let it out before like it was.
