:-) I started my summer scouting on our farm in Missouri and we have had alot of rain and we still have our soybeans growing but we got them in late so they will be there when the archery season opens up, Sept. 12, 2004, this is two weeks earlier than the usual Oct. 1, opening. I have a couple infra and motion sensor cameras on the ridges and I also feed them during the summer on the ridge, mainly just does feed there. I like to see what is on the ridge, we also have clover on the top of the hills on ground that is flat and we usually cut it twice, and right now it has not been cut due to the rain every day. Each night when we come home to turn into the drive, we see alot of does and small young deer jumping fences to sleep in the hay fields. Once they get cut the deer just go into the edges of the woods that surround the fields. I videoed a 190 + buck typical ten pointer two years ago there, in early September, but then we could not hunt as yet. This year the bachelor groups are fair game in September 12th.
Back to the beans fields in the bottoms next to the river, I had to walk the edge of the fields to get to the farm hidden field, and was checking alot of deer hoof prints, and there were alot, and alot going by several of my deer stands. As I worked the edges I was going around a point and noticed movement to my left side, so I froze and was totally camoed
and the slight breeze was from the north and the deer were to the west and I was south of the deer. The week before I had walked out of another field in full camo and we have a nine acre patch of clover and the deer was 200 yds away, and I froze with my camera ( video ) and it ran directly toward me, he could not smell me so I just froze and videoed as he got within 40 yds., and then I wanted to see what he would do with a
bleat from my mouth, and he really did not like it a high tailed it back to his corner and over the fence to an island that we let them have for a safe place year round. The lesson that learned was not to make a sound and just sit down and be still.
So when I saw the bachelor bucks in the bottom bean field I froze and when they were not looking I squatted to the ground and took off my backpack, hunting chair ( light camo ), and back pack that had my video camera in it. Once I did this I got the camera and just stayed where I was at camoed very good, face, gloves, and hat, and bug tammer top. I retrieved my camera and videoed. Once they went back into the woods
after feeding on several types of brouse.
I moved back into the brush and trees on the point I was on and keep a visual search on the west side and to the north.
I stayed there for six hours until a little after 9:00 p.m. and then went
back. I videoed seven different velvet bucks, and two were three year olds and had really nice racks, 140 plus, or maybe better. Of course they are still growing, and had mass on the beams already, and the tops still looked like bulbs still growing and going to branch some more. I also one about 500 yds. to the north in the far bean field. A large body but way to far for my camera or bino's. Then night ended when a two year old with a nice wide rack in velvet crossed in front of me to the north at the same time a super gobbler crossed going the opposite way to the south ( my left) and the buck was 50 yds. in front of me and could see me really good but could not smell me and I just kept videoing him until he ran across the field to my right and then went south to get behind me. When I now longer could see him, I videoed the gobbler and a jake moving south to find a tree to roost in, and when I was looking at them, the buck finally got my scent and he let out a tremendous snort and kept it up and then the coyotes started yapping and he shut up. I had a great day scouting and I will not go back to the field unless I can get in a tree and scout it long range and in my scent lock suit. I will keep everyone up on the scouting. Wish I know how to put the video on the computer for you all to see.

I love reading your accounts of what's happening in your hunting world Grandma. I keep thinking that I should be turning a page on your book to see what happen's next. But alas...there's no more reading until you post again. darn!

It sounds like you'll get some great animals this year. If you want to, you could mail me a tape with the video on it and I can bring it onto the computer for us all to see.

let me know on that one.
