I primarily use a mouth diaphram and grunt tube for my calling.Last year I picked up a Hoochie Mama cow call and liked it,so did the elk  .I never got the bull that came in but he sure got sucked in by that call.

I don't bugle much, just basically do it as a locator call and rely on cow calls to bring in a lovesick bull.Don't get me wrong,I have had bulls get pissed off that there might be another bull trying to take his ladies away and come looking for a fight but that can also make him round up his harem and leave the country.

I use mouth diaphram calls and a grunt tube also they are easy to use with a little practice and also hands free I also use the hoochie mama by primos wich is in my opinion is one of the best cow call ever made.

Evary bull will react differently to your calling but cow calling is usually the best way to get him in close. You don't want to scare them off by sounding like the biggest, badest bull in the country when I bugle I try to sound more like a younger bull. If you sound like a younger bull chances are the bigger guys won't be afraid to answer. When your cow calling in the early part of the rut bulls will often come in silent.

Go pick up a couple of moth reeds and a hoochie mama and start practcing the season is just around the corner. I find the primos reeds with the hyper plate are the best sounding and easiest to use.

I like to use a variety of calls to sound like a lot of different elk. I use diaphram calls, Sceery Ace-3, E.L.K Power bugle and I believe the Primos Hootchie Mama is the best on the market. Unfortunately I haven't been lucky enough to be drawn for elk in a long time. Maybe this year.

I use mouth diaphrams combined with a grunt tube, they're in my opinion the most versatile call and with practice the most realistic. For those do-it-yourselvers there’s a neat website where you can purchase a kit to make your own, it’s at: http://www.myelkcall.com/. (When making these calls I found it worked better to pre-stretch the latex before putting them in the jig, this makes them last longer with a more consistent sound). If you’re not into making your own, the hyper plate calls as Jack19 mentioned, are excellent.

The Abe & Son Dominator Bull Call is also one of my favourites. Same as the diaphram kit, it works better to pre-stretch the latex before putting it on the mouthpiece. This will make a big difference in the ease of tuning and how long it will stay in tune.

The Hoochie mamma cow call is definitly one of the better cow calls out there, it’s a very simple call to use and sounds great!

There’s an elk-calling guru by the name of Paul Medel, who produces a series of videos jam-packed with information on elk calling. What the bull bugles mean, what the cow calls mean and how to make them, set-ups, calls used in the pre-rut, peak rut & post rut, plus loads more. Goes by the nickname Elknut, check it out at: http://www.elknut.com/. Highly recommended!!!
