Edmonton... Create lasting memories with your family and friends in July by taking them fishing!

It’s a free fishing weekend on July 12 and 13, which means Albertans can try fishing without having to buy a licence. Residents can fish for free in any public water body in Alberta that has an open fishing season (not including national parks).

“Free fishing weekends are a great opportunity for experienced anglers to introduce their non-fishing family members and friends to the joys of fishing and in the process, create fun and lasting memories together,” said Ted Morton, Minister of Sustainable Resource Development.

To celebrate the free fishing weekend, a number of events are being held across Alberta. For a list of events and local contact information, please go to the My Wild Alberta website at http://www.mywildalberta.com or call 1-877-944-0313.

When angling, make sure to follow Alberta’s sportfishing regulations. Pick up a free copy of the 2008 Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations wherever licences are sold, or at any Fish and Wildlife Office. The guide is also available on the My Wild Alberta website.

Albertans who try fishing that weekend and want to continue fishing can easily purchase a Wildlife Identification Number (WIN) card and an Alberta sport fishing licence online by clicking the Alberta Relm link at the My Wild Alberta website.

Alberta has two free fishing weekends each year: during the summer to coincide with National Fishing Week and another in February in conjunction with Family Day. The first free fishing weekend of 2009 will be February 14-16.
