Great gobblers a-plenty in Arnprior on Saturday
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The region's budding beards and spurs are invited to a day of fun and excitement up in the Valley, guaranteed to be a gobbling good time. The Arnprior Fish & Game Club along with the Lower Valley Gobblers will be hosting the 6th annual JAKES Day on Saturday in Arnprior. The event begins at 10 a.m. at McLean Ave. beach across from the ball diamond, and runs until 3 p.m.

Nature walks are arranged on McNamara Trail to check out the habitat enhancement projects. JAKES Day will also feature the MNR canine unit and a birds of prey demonstration by Little Ray's Reptile Adventures.

The event costs $5 and includes an annual membership to the Juniors Acquiring Knowledge of Ethics and Sportsmanship program with a barbecue lunch also available. For more information, call Blake Corbin at 613-622-7564.

B.A.I.T. RESULTS

The 20th annual Blind Anglers International Tournament was another huge success. The catch of the day went to the team of pro angler Rick Klatt and blind anglers Bob Austin and Darrell Furgoch, with a total weight of 14.86 lbs. The biggest pike tipped the scales at 12.76 lbs. and was taken by Mike Augot with Grace Leach, who won for the second time. The biggest walleye trophy went to Mark Labine and Roger Gervais. Thanks to Lion's Club PR & recognition chairman Al Page for another great year in Westmeath.

DEATH RAISES QUESTIONS

Cecile Lavoie, a 73-year-old grandmother, died recently in the first fatal bear attack this year in North America. Lavoie and her husband were fishing in northwestern Quebec when she was dragged into the forest by a black bear. He managed to scare the animal away from his wife, who was bleeding. When he returned to the area later with police, the bear confronted them. For unknown reasons, police waited until morning to continue the search. Cecile Lavoie's devastated husband said his wife of 51 years was an angel, and loved to hunt and fish.

TESTING, TESTING...

This week's recommendation is the Camp Time Roll-A-Table. It's ideal for camping, hunting or fishing, and its unique 11-segment roll top means it occupies a space less than 4% of its setup size. For more information on the world's greatest camp table, check out camptime.net or call Dave Cook (509-928-3051).
