Huntsman

So I have an older bow that was handed down to me by my Mother in-laws husband cause he thought it was a good idea like 20yrs ago (if its that old) to hunt with a bow, that's where the idea ended and it sat an sat.............So now I have it. Now I currently shoot a Mathews and when I recieved this ancient thing I was beyond belief
People actually hunted or further yet, harvested deer or bigger with this style of bow??
Now I realize that thousands of "traditional bow hunters" venture out every year with thier stick bows and succesfully harvest game with them. I just can't believe the evolution of the compound bow..especially with todays standards. This bow has a 44.5" axle to axle, the string part is normal and the rest is plastic or something looking like cable with steel ends holding the looped ends of the string. So anyhow, I replaced the old steel pin sights with some Tru-Glo fiber optics and as well the arrow rest which was just a tab of plastic glued to the side of the shelf(the shelf looks to be for finger release). I don't know what its draw wt. is but the let-off is something to be desired.
I fired a few arrows into my block and was quite surprised with the penetration with the 125gr field tips. So are there any older gents who've experienced hunting with these Pawn Shop window bows? I'd actually like to give this bow a whirl, maybe get some blood on it seeing as the original owner neglected to.
Thanks in advance for your input,
Cheers,
