I saw a good question posted on another forum about scoring antlers and whether the gross score is better than the net score. Interesting...should a rack have deductions against it just because it isn't symetrical or should it be given the full credit for what it is?

Interestingly enough this discussion was held during the scoring yesterday at the Calgary Archery Centre. Most of the guys that were there at the time agreed that gross score is what only matters as that is what they grew. Makes sense, but I believer that the net score is better because it was created to standardize a method for handling anomolies on antler growth (makes for a fair, level playing field for all trophy entries).
I think a better question is whether or not you prefer Typical or Non Typical scoring.

I am a typical person......
Non-typicals are cool but I prefer a nice symmetrical rack....
I have a 178 mule deer with 3/8" deductions.... to me it is a thing of beauty....
My buddy loves non-typicals.... the hairier the better..... No wonder we get along we have a good agreement... typicals are mine.... non typicals are his!....
I think that gross score gives good measure for antler growth but net typical score rewards aesthetics...... It is good to have both measures when people tell me the score of their deer I always ask for net or deductions..... that is just me.... I think it is good to have both scores because if there was just gross score.... it is hard for me to picture the antlers....
Another thing that I like for aesthetics is when WT deer have antler tips that curve towards each other making a crown..... No score for this....
To me it's not necessarily size that makes the trophy but also aesthetics....

quite honestly ...to me score means nothing ...... I would rather mount a a knarly looking rack that has charictor than a typical rack .....if ya wanna talk about score P&Y B&C are nothing more than just a bunch of ol'boys ...... I hate their scoring system they are looking for the perfect deer ...which changes with every mans opinion ....... we all married the "perfect" person to us ..... think about that for a minute ......
IMO the SCI scoring system is the only one that makes sence ....score what the grow

I agree with Mikey. Give the animal credit for what he grew.
