B.C. could face beer drought as workers strike
VANCOUVER (CBC) - Strike action has shut down the distribution of all Molson and Labatts beer brands in B.C. – including beers imported by the two brewery giants.
Nearly 300 workers at Brewers' Distributor in New Westminster set up picket lines on the weekend – seeking better wages, pensions and benefits.
Brewery, Winery and Distillery Workers Union local 300 spokesperson Gerry Bergunder says they had no choice but to strike.
"We've negotiated to a point where the company doesn't want to go any higher, and we don't want to go any lower," he says.
Bergunder estimates the beer that's already in the market will last another two or three weeks.
Brewers Distributor spokesperson Joanne Scott says the company wants to "have a minimal impact on our customer base.
"So we need to get back to the table and work out the negotiations so we can get back to work and put the beer back into the market," she says.
The Liquor Distribution Branch says it will seek alternate suppliers if the dispute drags on.
