View Full Version : Fat Arrows for Outdoor 3d?
many guys shoot them for outdoors or does everyone go to skinny shafts when outdoor season rolls around?
i am shooting Gold tip xcutters right now and i am wondering home much they are goign to hurt me shooting outdoors..i know lots of guys shoot fatboys for outdoor and they fly fine..or so they say..
wondering if i should stick with them or go to a slimmer shaft for the outdoor season...
i lived in lethbridge for a 2 years so i know a thing or 2 about the WIND here in Southern alberta...

I had the same debate two years ago.
Here is what I did, I went out and shot a group of fat rrows and a group of thin arrows at 50 yards and kept score.
I went with highest scoring arrows.
I went indoors and did the same thing at 40 yards.

If group size at 40 yards with fat arrows is 3" and with skinny arrows it os 2"
Which will give you more points?

It all depends on what YOU belive will work. This is a (glass half full/half empty) question. Like you said "lots of guys shoot fatties outdoors" and lots of guys shoot the skinny shafts. Your arrows will work fine for 3D. In a stiff Lethbridge or Grande Prairie cross wind you will notice some drift. But you will with any arrow.
I shoot skinny Eastons because I KNOW they fly great.

Douger, you failed to mention the other reason you shoot skinny Eastons.......thhe part about every time you reach into your pockets a $20 bill falls out!!
yah i am sure they will fly good, bow spits them out at 295 so there is not alot of air time..

Well.......It all depends on where those two groups hit. I've shot the past Distance League with both fatties and skinnies. Over the weeks I found that it really didn't matter which arrows I used, my scores were not that far apart to definitely say that one was better than the other.
Although, out on the 3D course(s) - there is no Indoor circuit here - I have to say that I've scored higher with the fatter, more forgiving, linecutting target shafts than I have with my hunting shafts.
So - take your 3" and your 2" groups and put them both at 9 o'clock on the ten ring. Which will score higher? Most likely the fatties will be cutting or touching more line than the skinnies. Just a random thought from an idle mind.
Flame on! :286:

ALL things being equal on a calm day i pretty sure you would gain a few points with a fatshaft . I don`t see why a fatshaft would open up your group an inch... I have in the past shot the arrow dynamics. some days they would buy me some points and on other days it wouldn`t matter what i shot .
