Another opportunity to provide input on managing Ghost-Waiparous
Edmonton...Following extensive public consultation, a new directions document has been released for the Ghost-Waiparous area, northwest of Calgary. The public is invited to provide input on the document that will provide the basis for the recreational access management plan for the area.
In early 2003, over 1,100 Albertans completed written surveys while 400 responded to a telephone survey. The directions document is based on a thorough review of information provided during the first stage of public consultation as well as available resource management information for the study area.
The key issues that were consistently raised by the public during the consultation process included:
public safety,
environmental protection,
managing random camping,
designating trails, access points and staging areas, and
mitigating the impact of large party groups.
Alberta Sustainable Resource Development will focus on education, responsible use and ongoing monitoring to successfully implement the access management plan.

Guests to the web site will have the opportunity to provide their comments until November 7, 2003. The web site provides information on the many diverse values found in the Ghost-Waiparous area. In addition to providing a wide array of recreational opportunities, the area supports an active forest industry, oil and gas exploration and grazing for the agricultural sector. The planning process will not alter existing access for industrial activity within the region.
