Hi All,

I'm interested in learning archery and was wondering if you guys could give me some pointers. MONEY IS A HUGE PROBLEM.

I was thinking on spending around 50-80 bucks on a used bow on e-bay and try it out, see if I like it. If I do I'll learn with that bow and them spend some more money in the next year or so.

I was thinking on getting something with 31" draw and 55-80 weight. I'm just bellow 6' and weight 170Lbs, average built.

My option were for something like this:

Bow 1 (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=002&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=120140508706&rd=1&rd=1)
Bow 2 (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=013&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=230150840639&rd=1&rd=1)

I'm going camping soon so I wanted to bring it with me, find a safe place with a hill and try it out.

Any pointers??

Thanks a lot,

Vic.

First off.... remember you get what you pay for and there are some good deals... but if it seems too good to be true it is....

Draw seems to be long!.....

I am 6'... broad shouldered..... wait wrong ad!.....

and I have a 29" draw..... 31" seems too long!....

55-80 weight.... honestly for hunting 60lbs is lots especially starting out.....

50-60 lbs would be good in my opinion.... especially starting out.... being overbowed and uncomfortable is no good.... i have an 80 lb Hoyt..... and it is a beast to shoot!.... for no purpose other than to bury and ACC 3-71 so deep into a Target that you cannot pull it out!....

Bow 1.... is an antique!....

Bow 2.... not bad looks about 15 years old....

Best advice is to post your location on here and see if a member could help you out.... if in Edmonton area.... I would be happy to help you out.... I also have a couple of older bows for sale as well as a newer target /3D bow....

This sport does require money and time........like any other sport..... arrows are at least $60 a dozen..... not that one has to break the bank but be prepared to spend some cash....You will need arrows, a release, arm guard, string wax, bowcase,.....

good Luck!...

Thanks for the reply Acarcher. That gives me an idea of where to start.

I don't want to spend too much money because I don't know If I'll really stick to it. I've always wanted to buy a bow, but the only experience I have is from when I was a kid. A Indian that worked at my father's house back home (Brazil) gave me a hand made bow...

I'm also always for the cheap for the new. You give more value once you are getting the hang of things and a buy a good equipment. And it's also not a very good time for me to spend more money than I need. My company may be closing down very soon... :(

The bow number 2 comes with 3x arrows, wrist strap and a release (+ Quiver, front stabilizer, arrow rest...). Maybe that's something I could use.

I'm located in Mississauga, close to Toronto.

Thanks again for the help!!!

Honestly your best bet is to go into a local archery shop ... talk to the people in there ... they usaully have rentals of some sort as well as lessons for reasonable prices .... that way you try it , with equipment that fits you!!!!!! and you not stuck with a boat anchor if you dont like it.

Thanks for the reply Mikey.... I looked for specialized bow stores around my area but I could not find anything. Is there a web-site with lists of stores?

And out of curiosity, is there's a huge difference between normal compound bows and Oneida ones? I see there's a huge difference in the design.

Thanks for any info!!

Hello "victorbrca", I would just like to warn you before hand. This is the most addictive sport I have ever done, but it is also the best one besides golf, cough, cough. I hope you have success and I hope you have as much fun as I have in this sport!!!

lol... Thanks a lot for the advice Sniper Show... ;)

I looked around but I could not find any archery clubs or stores around my area. A friend of mine knows a shooting range around Barrie that has an Archery area. We are gonna go there so I can check it out.

I also let my anxiety take the best of me and ended up buying a bow for 150.00. It seemed like a good deal. It's a PSE Polaris Sport. Comes with a hard case, 6 arrows, 4 arrow heads, front stabilizer, sight, and what looks like a release and arm guard. No quiver and not sure what type of sight it has. 28 draw and 50-60 weight.

thats a damn good bow ... it was my first bow ...actually mine was a PSE Polaris Express

That appears to be a Scott lil' goose release ...an Oldie but a goodie ... I know a few that swear by it.(worth about 1/2 of what you pd). Zooming in with some whizzy software I got that string looks a little fuzzy ...get some good string wax ... (the Bohning stuff from Can Tire would be just fine) and giver a good waxin' or replace the strings and cables totally ... there should be string and cable measurements on the lower limb on a sticker .... get those numbers and give em to your string maker ... for the best one click the worlds best link in my signature ... dudes name is Allan Andreas

Allan is in Sask ... But he ships anywhere in canada express post and I am convinced that the cost is included in the making of his strings ... your best bet is to contact him ... for quote directly

Hey Victor,

While we're showing pictures of our bows, here's mine:

A 1992 PSE Edge that I purchased with everything you see for $ 150 as well!

Still using it today and absolutely love it. And, here's what a practice and dedication can get you:

Nice Mike. It looks very similar to mine!!

I got screwed up on the deal thou. The only thing the guy sent me was the bow, hand tab and release. Still fighting on ebay. But I really like the bow. Been shooting 30m (more like 29) on my back yard and getting 8's and above.
