I recently read an article about a fellow who before the shot on an animal says to himself "THIS ONES FOR YOU MOM" a little trick he picked up from a friend to keep himself focused.
I try to concentrate on a proper anchor point, using the right site-pin and remind myself to hold for a minimum count of three. Oh and maybe an Our Father or two!
Anyone else have a technique or saying they use to keep themselves focused before the shot?

Once I know I want to take the animal I see it as a target only and dont think about it as a trophy animal, dont look at the rack ,only the kill zone.

My theory is if you spend the time and shoot lots everything will fall into place automatically. The anchor point, the aiming, the kill.
But you need to practice, at lease once a week. And I mean practice.

Yup...Pick a spot...and practice practice practice. Make sure when you are practicing you shoot for a spot and not at a target per say. After all that practice, the picking a spot, draw, anchor and release should all be automatic.... :D

I am not of a target shooter, I can't seem to shoot well on paper (10 rings) but I shoot well on 3D animals and golf tee's. I like shooting golf tee's because it gives me a focus point like you guys mentioned earlier that's the key. I shoot allot, I have a bag target and 3D in my yard and I try to shoot 2-3 times a week 20 - 40 arrows each day and it helps. I also shoot a at my local 3D range every wednesday which has 20 - 25 targets and set at various distances.
Focusing on your target is one thing but field or yardage judgement is another, knowing your effective shooting range and knowing your yardage to the animal is the best practise. Most hunters don't practice that enough, shooting a target at 20 yards everyday is good but you need to mix it around a bit and shoot some targets at other distances. If you have that mastered then you are set.

Very well said Top-pin,
8) Mixing it up is the key to becoming a good Bow hunter, and keeping your muscles in tune as well as your bow will go a long way in harvesting your trophy.
