Got out for the 1st time this season on Thanksgiving weekend. Over the past few years I've done a good job at figuring out the travels patterns on our farm so I've got solid stands for every wind for both morning & evening.
Saw 4 deer on Saturday morning, including a small doe that was broadside and looking the other way at 40 yards but decided to let her grow up.
In the afternoon I had a doe cross the field upwind of me at about 80-100 yards. With only 30 minutes of shooting light left I had a doe come out of the bush lot and travel along the fenceline where my stand was. I bleated at her when she cleared the trees and put a 100 grain Sonic Pro right over her back. She didn't jump very far and then started to come back. I went to draw on her a 2nd time and either hit the trigger or didn't close my release properly and the arrow went 5 yards! She still didn't spook so I drew on her again, bleated to stop her and the broadhead hit mid-way back and low. I waited a while for her to leave the area, collected my arrows and left.
After having Thanksgiving dinner with the family we went back almost 3.5 hours later to track her. It took us almost 2 hours and she travelled over 600m but my father, brother and I finally found her along the shore of the lake.
Unfortunately, the only pic I got was of her hanging before we skinned her. She's a bit smaller than the one I got last year so I estimate her to be 100 pounds dressed and 2.5 years old.
Now I need to get another tag for rifle season - which starts 3 weeks from today!!!
