Just wondering if anyone is getting a mount done this year? I was bored this weekend so I took my deer cape out of the freezer and got it fleshed and ready for tanning. Probably mount it next month and hang him up to bring back some memories when I'm an old geezer.

Good day Sir. I'm working on a few mounts myself, its a slow process for me though as I'm still learning as i go. I've got 4 sets of deer antlers on the go and 3 sets of moose antlers to do yet. I'm kinda excited to get started on my trophy bull moose that i took this year. I finally had it scored so I can go ahead with it now. It scored 198.00 B&C. I was pretty excited about that. The official said that one in 10,000 moose in canada score that high. I have an 11 point whitetail getting done by the local taxidermist as well so I'm looking forward to hearing from him soon.

Manford, looks like you have one for the book, Congrats . Are you doing a shoulder mount on him or just the antlers? Big job doing a moose head, a full day just getting the hide fleshed and ready for tanning. The actual mounting is pretty easy though. I have taught taxidermy in the past and students are always amazed that after they learn how to mount a deer head how easy other game heads are. A week long course and you can do any game head from deer to cape buffalo. Pretty cool when you can do your own mounts and saves big bucks too. Keep at it .

No mounts for me this year :( .Still have a six foot cinnamon at the taxidermist I got to pay for.

My friend and neighbor is a taxidermist and I find myself in his shop quite abit.It always amazes me how he turns those dead animals back to life when he's thru.

Thanks Sir. All my mounts that I'm working on now are just antler mounts for now. Once I get those mastered I would like to try a head mount. Like I said I'm still learning and having the odd problems. I've noticed lately that alot of guys don't like the braided rope around the base of the antlers anymore. Im trying to figure out the easiest way to follow every little contour of the base but its tough. I've been using drywall compound but its to soft what do you think is the best way to do it.

Manford, the last few years I have been doing the Europeon skull mounts, no need to cover the skull with material. When I used to do the material over the skull cap method, I shaped the skull cap with a fine mache and let it dry and then painted it with latex paint. Then while the paint was still wet I used a flocking gun to blow the flock on. If you have never heard of flock it comes in many colors and is kind of like felt that has been ground into small particles. You load the flock in a special pump gun and blow it out and it sticks to the wet paint. It does a very neat job and there is no cutting material or glueing involved. Also there was a guy back in NB that did a great antler mount using cedar in a couple creative ways . I cant really discribe it but it looked really good and I will get you a picture of a mount when I go back to visit this summer.
