Took the first trip this year and on the first day I saw 5 moose. 1 bear, and a few deer. but nothing in range or legal to take.On the second day we moved areas and took a nice bull moose in velvet at 8:pm after a short stalk.Gutting and Quarterning and packing till 3:am was enough so a short sleep was in order. At 7:am back to the task and 3 more trips to haul out the rest of the meat and the head.It seemed easier to pack the head than to cut off the velvet rack, but now I wonder about that??
Arrived home Sunday with the moose and began to look for a locker that would hang it for me.
The only ones I could find would only hang it if they could butcher it.$.52/pound!!!!
This is rediculous. No lockers will hang an animal for any price.
Not being one to quit, I tossed the sacks in a friends empty freezer and continued the search.Finaly a friend that I know offered his personal cooler to hang the Beast. For a while I thought that I would have to cut the moose without hanging it, but all is well now.
In the mean time we went back out to hunt for the rest of the week. The weather was hot and the bugs were bad.Finaly after not seeing anything for 3 days we came home, tired from walking and enthusiastic about the season that is just starting.
