I'm in the market to buy a GPS and I think it'll be the Garmin Trex Summit.Does anyone use this particular unit? If so I'd like to hear what you think of it.
Thanks in advance.

I use a Garmin Etrex. It has no mapping features, but you can store waypoints and save routes. I have found it to be a valuable hunting tool. I use it to relate my position to other areas near by and I have saved routes that i may need to know if it gets dark or foggy, for when I am in my boat.

I have a older Magellan 2000 which I am planning on replacing. I was looking at the Garmin Summit as that replacement until I saw the 2004 Lowrance ifinder and ifinder pro models. Don't get me wrong , the Summit is a fine GPS but Lowrance has a tendancy of sticking with current models until the competition starts to catch up and then comes out with something that blows everything away. The Lowrance iFinder has mapping capabilities, it takes a map card and has topgraphic maps available for it. No biggy right, well they have CANADIAN TOPOGRAPHIC maps for it and if you live or fish the coast the iFinder Pro will also accept the nautical charts they use in lowrance GPS/Sounders. Plus it has all the other great features we all look for in a good GPS. Best of all is the price. The down side is mapping GPS units tend to be hard on battery life and the map cards are expensive, averaging about $250 per card. But one card I believe covers an entire province. I know what I will be buying this year.

I don't know the reason but at times when I am on the ocean fishing my GPS has told me that I was below sea level. Large metal objects can throw them off. It is fairly common, also noticed a delay in speed when traveling this to me is understandable as the data must travel from space to the receiver. The older GPS units tend to work better when you are moving as well. Standing still can confuse them somewhat which to me contradicts what your supposed to do when lost. The newer units are supposed to be better in this regard.

the Magellan sportstrac I recieved for Christmas is excellent, still have the old Magellan 2000 and like they say there is no comparison. Reviewed different models and this is the one that Santa chose for me
I do not think of any problems that I will have with it and I can install maps if I have to. but being way out in the boonies the map would not be of much use anyway

Yes Dillershortbow, I've tried Garmin's Canadian Roads and Recreation. It's great, and even has metroguide stuff for Lower Mainland, Toronto and Montreal (Not like I'd ever use those last two though - never get down to that end of the country)

I've even played around and looked around deep enough into the net to find software that is capable of ripping apart the mapping of the Garmin's stuff and allows you to edit it. Too bad that I've lost all that potential because my old computer got wiped out....

The stuff I've seen for the Garmins is a little more than 60 bucks though???
