No, I’m not singing entranced Christmas songs… in most areas of Canada the 2005 Hunting Season is a foot or about to kick-off and I for one can hardly wait to be donning my field gear, completing field-trials of some new equipment and hanging around a campfire for lunch and late dinners.

Some are reeling over this past spring’s successful turkey or bear hunts while others are borderline salivating at the chance to fling our weapons of choice over our back and head out to the field. Personally I’m facing one of the North America’s greatest hunts – Rocky Mountain Elk in the Southwestern Alberta foothills.

While many hunters received unfavorable news of their unsuccessful special-license permits my enthusiasm for hunting has been with me all year round and the excitement definitely cranks up a couple of notches during the month of August as we prepare our lists of landowners to confirm access, check and tune all of our gear, go on spontaneous scouting missions and feed that burning desire to get into the field.

Not everyone may be as prepared as they could be, so make sure you’ve checked all your gear, sighted in your weapons with comfortable confidence in your abilities and plan out your hunt – know the land you’re hunting (eg. road allowances, topography and dwellings) as well as plotting known food or water sources and bedding areas. Ensure that your equipment is in perfect condition otherwise you risk the chance of missing your once-in-a-lifetime shot, or even worse – wounding the animal and prolonging an agonizing death.

Practice does make perfect, but preparation will make your experiences the best they can be. Have fun, stay safe and remember to always bring a friend or family member with you to share in the marvels of your own pursuit!
