Well? Post up your pics of the fishing trips! What did ya catch? How big?

The only fishing I've done this year so far has been a little lake fishing for trout and some lake fishing for perch.

Here's a couple of pics from the perch fishing expedition....We had a great time!

I got out a couple of times before the floods. I went lake fishing down at Lee Lake with a buddy of mine and managed to hook a 7lb 10 oz Rainbow. The rivers have been to high and dirty for me to go out and attempt to fish them, perhaps I will get to do that when the weather gets better.

Thanks,

It was a lot of fun bringing her in, I was fishing with light equipment (6lb test line). I usually fly fish, but I decided to change things up a bit, just for fun. It is the biggest rainbow to date that I have ever caught, the next biggest was a 6.5lb rainbow - which was caught on a fly rod (that was a real blast.)

Only been out twice :( . It didn't help that I busted up a shoulder,(casting arm) in May.Feeling some better now and I'm going to test it out this weekend up on Phyllis Lake. We're getting the toon boats out and testing out a couple of new flyrods we made this year.

Only got out fishing a few times but heres what I caught. Fishing a small river northern ontario 11 1/2 foot noodle rod 6 lb test. I pulled this one out of a small hole in the river.
Mine is the one one the left the larger one. It ran me up and down the river for about 20 min before I could bring her in. I really love fishing rainbow

Just got back from Alford lake, and we slammed the rainbows this weekend.Anything in olive would entice a strike. The smallest bow was twelve inches and the biggest was eighteen inches.

We got our asses soaked on saturday afternoon, but we wouldn't come off the lake, that's how good the fishing was.

Today we got on the water at eight a.m. and it was really slow.Came in for a beer at noon and got back out a half hour later. Finally the bite turned on and we fished till four, and finally had to get off so we could break camp and get out of there, got home a nine p.m.

Just talked to some friends that headed south for the long weekend. If you can get past all the logging that has been done along the Old Man River, Dutch Creek, etc. the fishing in these headwaters was great they said. Little higher water than usual (including the Livingstone) but the water was clear and very healthy fish were abundant.

I have to agree with Hubbard, that is exactly what I am waiting for....the rivers to clear up so we can do some fly fishing in the Oldman, livingstone, dutch and racehorse. Every time I thought the rivers were getting lower, we got another douse of rain....I hope the rivers will be fishable by next week, I will be spending next week camping up there.

None of the rivers N.W. of Calgary are even close to being clear or fishable.I was up in the Caroline area last week, the Clearwater,Red,Little Red,Raven are all the color of chocolate milk and running fast.Tay River was the only one coming down and trying to clear up.

Guys - I'm not kidding you, the Oldman, Dutch, Racehorse, Lvingstone are all in excellent condition with A LOT of healthy fish. I can't comment on Cataract Creek, Highwood and Sheep though - I haven't had a chance to get out that way at all and the guys I know that were down south last weekend didn't head out that way... but if you're hankering for dropping a line somewhere's west of the #22 between Maycroft and Indian Graves Campground you will not be disappointed.

Ok I'll bite, pickeral / walleye = same fish

Yanks call it walleye, and the canucks call it pickeral right????????

In all northern regions BC-Ontario at least I have heard ppl call it pickeral, but when I was in southern Ont. we called em walleye.

hanging on for this one!

Yep, when I lived in Northern Alberta, we called the Pickeral. Now I live in southern Alberta and they are called Walleye.

Pickeral/walleye=same fish

No they do not.Pickeral are a species unto themselves, two of which are in Canada,CHAIN PICKERAL,and GRASS PICKERAL.They mostly resemble a northern pike in appearance but do not grow to the larger size of pike.

I will have to investigate this, both pickeral and walleye look alike, but there are definitely different species of pike, grass, northern and I even think gar are in the same family as Pike.

I am almost certain though thatpike and pickeral are a different fish.

I'll get some info and post it here.

What I found with a quick search on google.There's a pic there,but I couldn't copy it.

Chain Pickerel, Esox niger

Submandibular pores 7 or 8 (rarely 9) and branchiostegal rays 14-17, most often 6 + 9 (6 on ceratohyal, 9 on epihyal) on each side; pattern dark ground colour with pale wavy, vertical stripes in young, and golden chainlike markings in adults.

AHHH this just in:
http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/fish/fishspecs/piketext.html

I think they are distinctively in the Pike family as their name's will attes too. All of them having the prefix to their name " esox "

chain pickeral are in the Pike family, not to be confused with the walleye.

Here is the MNR ontario's species page out of the regs:
http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/MNR/pubs/fishing/fishRegs/2005/Fish_Id_fr2005.pdf

They don't make any mention of pickeral on the species page , however they did add that they share a common term here:
http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/fishing/spec.html (about 3/4 way down the page, in common names)

Also they explain the terminology here:
http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/fishing/walleye.html

Man I wish BC regs had this info, I grew up in Ontario but have out here for almost 20 years now. Kind of a shame to get the best info from Ontario and the New york State Warden's Service for a fish that are found in almost all the mainland provinces.

HTH, I'll keep digging though

TIm

P.S. I just found this too
http://www.landbigfish.com/fish/fish.cfm?ID=42

It may be that chain pickerel is a name much like the slough shark for the Albertans in the room. This one lends to them being Pike. It does go on to say that the world record for this species is 9 lbs......somthing, definitely not a northern pike, but a contender for the grass pike for sure.

Here are the world records for most species, and the chain pickerel is listed here:
http://www.schoolofflyfishing.com/resources/worldfreshrecords.htm

And check this out, in the definitions here they call pike pickerel, and call walleye, walleyed pike:
http://fishing.lifetips.com/subcat/73146/fish-species-information/freshwater/

Heheheh, man this can on forever eh.
I think regionally fish are named and renamed, the only thing that seems to remain consistant are the scientific names, and I know I don't type well enough or think fast enough to start looking that stuff up.

I hope this fills your boots for a night, it was fun for me to look up.
