Being as how our fearless leader has his trusty old Polaris up for sale and he won't say what the new machine will be it is time for a poll to see if we can guess what it might be. Sorry no prizes here.

What's it gonna be?

It says one of the choices is 'cheap asian knock off pieces of crap' and then lists the Suzuki and Arctic Cat separately? That's splitting the vote LOL!

Sorry, that's my Honda arrogance is leaking out! I'll probably regret it one day slogging through the skeg after it dies somewhere completely inconvenient.

He seems like a smart man, Yamaha is the only choice then. Get a big ol' Grizzly and it'll get you there and drag your friends along with you! :D

Hey Grizzly - you must never have owned a Yamaha otherwise you'd be weary of recommending the most high-maintenance & high cost of ownership quad available!

I'll admit there sport quads & utility quads all look great but everyone person I've know that owned one has painfully admitted they will never own another one - mostly due to the level of maintenance.

:-o OUCH!!!

Hey Grunter, sounds like you've had a bad experience. Don't hold back, tell me what you really think about the Yamaha product. LOL

Actually, I've got 3 of them, a 1987 Moto-4 350, a 2002 Kodiak 400 and a 2004 660 Grizzly and I've had nothing but good luck with all 3 of them. I've had to replace the brakes a few times on the old 87 and once on the Kodiak but that's just regular maintenance. I put these quads through every kind of crap you can think of, where we hunt moose is mostly swamp and muskeg and they have held up admirably, actually quite a lot better than the Polaris bikes that have tagged along with us. :hump:

I think all of the new quads are pretty reliable as long as you don't go too crazy on them, but I'm Yamaha all the way and it is going to take some mighty big convincing to get me to change.

What are you riding?

All I'm riding these days is a dream!!! Used to have a Kawasaki KVF300 but had to sell it... Only had 330km on it too! I was a little choked that the dealer never mentioned at the time I bought but two weeks later they brought out the 360 with the selectable 4wd and front diff lock... I was mad! I chose Kawasaki because it was the preferred choice of the military and they typically only invest in the most durable and consistent.

Glad to hear that you've had excellent experience with Yamaha! Maybe one day I will own one too!

When is the new ride getting here? Surely those short little legs can't cover too much ground in a day. :flipoff:

BOWZONE, you oughta check out that new beast of a Bombardier - that new 800 of theirs... It got quite the review in ATV World Magazine.

I can't believe that Polaris is in the lead... is this some sort of bias for you?!

Grunter, you say they (?Canadian? military) only buy the best. Do you really know how RFPs work and how contracts are assigned. It's political. A good contract was from the airforce with their CF18's, but a bad contract was with the navy with their frigates. But I guess the ATVs don't fall withing Major Crown Project purchases.

Be Careful you're putting words in my mouth! :-P

I said that they TYPICALLY choose the best and yes I do understand the RFP process... it is a large part of what I do at Bell Canada. Politically poised - most of the time an RFP is, but don't categorically deny the military their due diligence just because the Federal government has never supported our National Defense with deep pockets!

 Nice come back.

I personnally do not own an ATV, but have been considering the Honda's as per many commentary for an ATV, but I am also looking at eventually trying a ROKON two wheel drive motorcycle (used for the bush), but I just can't find anyone out-there that owns one in my area (Ottawa-Gatineau).

I hope the lack of ROKON users don't mean that the product is not approapriate.

Grunter
07-05-2005, 07:57 AM
Never seen a ROKON in person myself but I've seen the ads... Everyone I know with a Honda has been more than pleased with its performance and reliability, even well-used ATVs. As far as the 'bush-pig' 2-wheeler is concerned, I wouldn't want to be riding one of those bad boys up/down hill. Likely they're good for fairly flat wooded areas but anywhere you need to get to with a thin profile machine like that - you probably shouldn't be using the bike there in the first place. Besides how could you pull a downed animal through the ruff stuff when you have only half the traction or stability of an ATV?

LeGrand
07-05-2005, 08:15 AM
Iguess you need to learn how to use the ROKON first and stabilise yourself when carrying or even pulling stuff. It advertises being able to carry 1000 lbs, and able to pull 3000 lbs. Seen some pictures of it parked on its foot stand and carrying a full deer on a seat rack. It supposed to be very well balanced in the front (weight wise) and supposingly the size of the tires and the tire pressure gives it with the chain driven system in front and the rear very good traction.

That's why I would like to try before considering further. I could go down to New Hamshire, but it's far.

Hey Scott - I saw a Polaris in its' crate, wrapped up nice on a dualie heading out of Calgary on the highway... wouldn't happen to be yours would it?!

LeGrand

Grunter, I decided on the ROKON, it's being delivered as we speak from New Hampshire.

You know that it can carry up to a 1,000 lbs, and haul 3,000 lbs. It can also climb-up a 60 degree hill. When going down a hill, it compresses very nice.

I had the opportunity to try one near where I live, and it was magic. Everything they advertised and comments from magazines articles on their testeing it, was exactly what they said, nothing more, nothing less.

I rode ATV's before, and won't put them down, but for my hutning needs, the decision was well made.

Grunter

That's great! I think a lot of our members would appreciate any commentary you can make on the ROKON. Pictures and a review would be great, just put it into the Articles and News Submission forum and one of the admins will take care of the rest.

Been looking for the last couple of weeks now and have seen the Bombardier, Polaris, Arctic Cat and Yamaha offerings for this year.

I've decided no to the following:

1. Honda - this is a no brainer ;)
2. Suzuki - Not interested in this one.
3. Bombardier - Went to Martin Equipment in Edmonton here and their sales rep couldn't decide if the warranty was for 2 years or 6 months nor could he decide if it covered the motor only or the whole drivetrain. Honestly, it was the most **** poor service that I've ever had anywhere. The kid was more interested in possible selling a boat than working on the quad deal. So this was a deciding factor and the fact that they didn't have a test unit for me to try out didn't help their cause. I may have looked at these a bit harder if it wasn't for the above reasons.
4. Kawasaki - Looked at them...not really interested in them.
5. Polaris - this was a hard one for me as I'm a huge Polaris fan. I want to go to a bigger motor but they don't have any with a reliable pull start and I don't want to go with an 800 quite yet..

So, it boils down to the following ATV's:

1. Arctic Cat - H1 - 650

http://www.new4wheelers.com/colby/images/6504x4.jpg
2. Yamaha Grizzly 660

http://www.psndealer.com/powersportsdlr/images/NewVehicles/NV23639_2_400.jpg
So, which one do you guys think it's going to be? I've put a deposit on one of the machines above...

Mikey
04-02-2006, 01:29 PM
we all know yer a ***** ....so the Cat would be most fitting ...

Both are excellent machines scott ...you know that ....

the Grizz however has a smother ride and is more like you .... lower center of gravity ...

Honestly tho scott I would go with the Polaris 500 .... Way more than enough balls to get ya thru anything yu'll get into ...and a heck of alot easier to work on ...

Tried tested and true ....

Between the two I would probably go with the Grizzly. Tried and true reliability, kinda like a Honda  :flipoff: . I think the MRP rack system is one of the best things that Arctic Cat has and it is too bad the other makers haven't followed along. I was very interested in a Cat awhile back but where I am there is no dealer for them. There hasn't been a long term Cat dealer here for awhile. They usually only last a couple of years and then they go. It has been over a year since the last one when tits up.( Hope I can say tits) oops I did it again.

I just bought a new quad and was looking at the same ones you were and decided on the Suzuki 700, I have only had Honda's before this, I like the KG, I did add some after market tires, because the stocks arn't that good like most stock tires.
