First of all I'd like to explain my problem:
I hunt in a very popular area in South Dakota. People come from everywhere to hunt this place. I work hard all summer to scout the area, get my stand in as early as possible, and when hunt am ver self concious about scent. When out-of-staters come opening day (this area is open only about a week) they stick a stand less than 50 yards than mine and have no respect for other hunters. They come in late, they don't scout, and they don't care about scent (I actually seen one smoking while archery hunting!)
I thought of a solution though. I would like to set about 5 stands in one tree strip. I hope this would be enough to discourage the hunters. This may sound unfair but I've already said they don't care about any other hunters. The main problem is stands of course are $80 for the cheap ones. I would like to make wooden stands. These stands don't have to be anything special, just a platform and a seat, but I do need them to be sittable so if someone decides to sit in someone elses stand (which does happen) they won't get hurt.

Any Ideas?
Also do you think I'm being unfair with this idea?

Unfortunately, if it is Public land, it is there for everyone to use, slobs or not. I think the key is to get further off the road. You will see alot less activity of the human kind.

have remote mines so that when there all comfortable you can blow them into the air..lol jk.... ummm try to trick them put a stand in an abvious place so that theyll go there then build a well hidden wooden treestandpainted with camo... if that doesnt work get a portable ladder treestand and put it on a tree where the deer will least notice you on the day before hunting season... this year we had put wooden homemade tower stands in wide open areas the day after we came hunting and at around 830 there were atleast 6 or 7 does that came about 40 yards infront of this stand they looked i didnt move and they just proceeded ended up shooting one and they didnt even notice me as danger.

Thanks for your advice. I have tried to go rly deep off the road. Infact last year i hauled my tripod almost 2 miles and when I was sitting it thats when I saw a guy come in, he seen me, sat down on a bucket and smoked a cigarette. But your right it is public land and I'm thinking of concentrating more on paying a little money to get permission on private land nearby.

Its even more fun to drive by the refuge when rifle opens. I don't rifle hunt but its a funny sight seeing about 10 orange vests in a mile area.

haha yup pretty illegal to shot em.

I agree I would love to move to Canada many more hunting oppurtunities. I'm trying to apply for archery elk tags nd the average hunter will get chosen after 6 years of entering and you can only get chosen for a tag once in ur life.
