evenin all,

heres my dilema. i recently purchased a 300 remington short action ultra mag in a savage stainless synthetic. now i have recently aquired a remington model 700 in 7 mm mag stainless synthetic. the "boss" says i can only have one.(kinda like with my bows  ), anyways i cant really decide between the two. the savage shoots soo nice, little to no recoil, and all in all is a very nice gun. the only drawback is no clip. with the remington, it has a clip, the action is soooo smooth and the nicest trigger i have ever felt. i see that ballistically, the 300 is a little better in general but the 7mm is no sloucheither. i hunt deer mostly by bow but occasionally i will pop one with the ole canon. but i do hunt moose and large black bears in grizz country also. has anyone out there shot moose with the 7mm or big blacks or grizz bears? i know 99.9% is shot placement but does anyone think one will do the job better than the other??? any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks Jess

If you are going after big bears and there is a possibility you might need the extra punch I would keep the 300 ultra mag. On the other hand if it was me I would keep both the guns. Ya gotta lay down the law when it comes to the hunting stuff.

If you have to stick with just the one keep the .300 Ultra Mag. Overall it's a more versitle cartridge, has more options when it comes to bullet weights

I've taken moose, elk and bears with my 7mm mag.I wouldn't be afraid to tackle any game that walks this continent with it.I cannot comment on the 300 SAUM as I don't know anyone who has used one.I would imagine it's no slouch according to the gun writers pimping for the gun mags.

8) 8)
Either one will do well on just about anything smaller than a Kodiak Brown Bear(when a howitzer is the gun of choice).
I have a 7mm. Rem. Mag. Savage(with clip), and I haven't yet found anything it won't knock down. You're right about shot placement tho'.
Personally, I agree with the keep 'em both idea.
Hell, I've got six now and I'm still adding.

Rookies  I have around 25 or so guns and always adding, barely ever selling. Just razzin ya tecspec :P

I saw two options above, one rifle or the other. Wheres the one about sending the wife to Siberia on a Greyhound bus   . J/K

If I had to choose, I would keep the Savage in 300. hands down. Good luck in your descision, and remember there always is that third choice .

From what I heard i would agree with T-man,the 300 ultra mag you can get more variety of bullet grains, and since you shoot small[deer]to big[moose]I think it would be your best bet,but everyone is right both will do the job! Good luck

Well then ...some interesting points .... I have never shot any of the above weapons but I have shot the 300 savage with my old model 99 lever action ..... was a great all round gun ...with that shell I have had no problems taking down bear, moose or what have you .... My buddy back in PG shoots a model 700 in 7mm and loves it but when it comes to bigger game he kinda wishes he had a bigger shell to throw at it ...I personally dont see a differance both rounds are perfectly capible of taking down anything that roams around yer neck of the woods jessbennett.

My Thunder stick currently is a 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser action .... I like it ....

I think I might sell it however and go an .06

jessbennett - I've owned a .264 Win Mag that has pretty much the same velocity, trajectory and energy of the 7mm and it was a great gun - very accurate.

I now own a Savage Synthetic/SS chambered in .300 WSM and it is an AWESOME gun. I bought mine mere months before the AccuTrigger came out but this gun handles great. The groups were decent for me with 150gr Nosler BST's zeroed in 3 inches high @ 100 yards but when I switched to 180gr Failsafes I was getting consistent 3" groups on the 300 yard target (we have targets setup at 100, 200 and 500 yards)!

Hands down this rifle is far better that I had expected and the recoil doesn't feel a whole lot worse than my .264 had.

If you're concerned about which rifle to carry into grizzly country I would do a little homework on which bullets have the best sectional density and bullet weight retention for your calibers. Right now I think that Nosler's new Accubond (or is it Interbond?) and the Barnes XXX Shock are the ones to pay attention to.

Hands down I prefer bowhunting, especially now after having such an incredible season but I still enjoy reading about rifles and ballistics and shooting at the farm.

My father in law works for fedral cartridge and told me test are showing the new short mags are so high pressure that rifleing is starting to detiorate after 300 rounds. just my 2 cents.

Mikey, that's what I've got as well - 6.5x55.... Great little gun.

I say little, cause an old friend of my dad's came to visit us when I was about 14 and gave the rifle to me. He was a gunsmith and chopped 11" off the barrel. Now it's a short little bush gun that is REALLY light to carry, but shoots like a dream.

My brother still has a 6.5 in original condition though, and it's still a sweet shooter...
