Hey fellas. I recently shot a black bear with my bow and I wanted to share my experience with everyone. Im particularly reaching out to fellas who are considering harvesting predators(bears, cougars, ect..) or even just something new.
I always hunted deer for my entire life and I've always been strict about that. I've never been disapointed with a hunt, so long as it went smooth. I never felt like I made a mistake by loosing that arrow. Well recently a coworker of mine was all gung ho to hunt black bears with archery gear. I figured ah what the heck that sounds fun!! I ended up going out one evening and putting a big stalk on an even bigger bear. I had him at 15 yards, he turned and bolted and I shouted Hey! to stop him and nailed him at 30 yards. It was as quick as that, and even more important to notice is that thats as much consideration to black bear hunting as i gave it. I just went for er.
What i found at that moment of release was excitement, i was pleased, id made a great shot, and the big boar dropped 25 30 yards in the timber beside me. Id done it, just like many deer before, but something felt different. When i put my hands on that bear i just felt horrible, sickly, like id changed my beliefs my values partially for the enjoyment of my coworker, and partially for myself. Its hard to explain but what i want you to understand is that its changed something for me. Im rather dissapointed that i didnt stick with my instincts. Im a deer hunter, for me that includes all them vegetarians, i wasnt meant to be a bear hunter. And unfortunately i cant give that big boar his life back. But what i can do is help other hunters, so they dont make the same mistake as me.
I really want you all to understand im not saying dont bear hunt, dont do safari, just deerhunt. I would never ever dream of telling someone what to and what not to do in regards to hunting. I love hunting, we all love hunting the creatures we do. If my pal gets his bear im goona be excited for him! all im saying is that personally its not something i wish i would have done.
So for all you hunters considering trying something new, just make sure to give yourself the appropriate time to really feel it out. I just dont want anyone to feel dissapointed from something thats supposed to bring us the utmost pleasure.
And to all you bear, bobcats, wolf hunters, the best of luck to all of ya, and i look forward to reading your stories and looking through the pics :D
good hunting everyone.
