Cops taking time on ATV thefts?

Abbotsford News

Abbotsford Police say they are reviewing their file after a Sumas Prairie man complained police are taking their time as they investigate the theft of two of his quads.
The incident began on Oct. 30 when Gary (who doesn't want his last name published) received a call from a man interested in looking at the two all terrain vehicles he had for sale.
That afternoon, five young man came to his Sumas Prairie property to check out the ATVs. After going for a short spin on the property, the men decided they were going to buy the vehicles.
Then one of the men noticed a third ATV that they were interested in purchasing.
The vehicle's battery wasn't working, so Gary offered to fix it.
That's when the men jumped on the two ATVs for sale and took off, as did the driver of the Corsica, said Gary on Friday.
A member of Gary's family, however, noted the licence plate number of the Corsica, and Gary called police at 2:30 p.m.
Gary said he was told the officer for the area was dealing with a crash nearby, and would come out later. Gary called again at 6 p.m, and then 9 p.m, before he was called by an officer, who gathered the information from Gary.
As Gary checked in daily after Saturday night, he was told there was nothing to report. On Wednesday, he was told the officer was not working.
"I'm frustrated, because it seems these days that property crime is not a priority anymore," he said.
"If they would have come down right away . . . I would have had my quads back," he said.
He said he would understand it there was "absolutely no lead," but says he's concerned that it seems police did not act on the information, including the licence plate number, he provided.
Const. Shinder Kirk said that while they appreciate residents providing licence plates when reporting a crime, a licence plate is just a starting point for investigators.
He notes that licence plates can be swapped between vehicles and police also need to determine if the owner was driving the vehicle or not.
"A lot of legwork has to be done between the time a plate (number is received) and a person is brought to justice," said Kirk.
Kirk could not say if the investigating officer spoke to the owner of the vehicle involved in the theft, or if he passed the task on to another officer to follow up while on his regularly scheduled days off.
"The entire case is being reviewed," said Kirk.

Whistler ATV thefts
October, 06 - 11:28 AM
WHISTLER(CKNW/AM980) -- Just in time for the first snow to fall, someone has made a huge haul of all-terrain vehicles in Whistler.

Sometime overnight, the thieves drove off with twenty, four-wheel ATV's parked at the base of Whistler mountain.

Total value: about one-hundred-thousand dollars.

If you're offered a good deal on a red or green Yamaha or Bombardier four-wheeler, the Mounties would like to hear from you.
