It is unfortunate that you feel negative towards natives in Canada but it’s not like we are all on a war path to kill any animal that moves. We only hunt because we need to hunt; yes there are some people that hunt strictly for trophies “sound familiar?” You should take a close look at the aboriginal acts and some basic history about natives in Canada and what we went through just so you can have farmland, cities, and the right to post your land. I understand that private property should be respected and this man did do the wrong thing but dont pile all the natives in the same bucket for this, ultimately this was an individual decision, even though it may have been wasteful it still was individual. Your last comment sounds a bit racist actually and I personally I would rather be aboriginal than a racist.

Hi all just wanted to post up and give my 2cents worth .I dont think this is a good topic to be talking about because the right for natives to hunt for food is out of are hands there is nothing you or I can do about it .Plus I just want to post as well that because that person was metis or native has nothing to do with why that animal left laying there. I have seen plenty of none natives pull off this same thing on not only deer but with elk.Native or not these types of things need to be delt with or no one will be hunting . I do hope that person will get what is coming to him . I hope this does not sound racist because it is not intended that way.

Well said Jackal,

I've seen just as many white guys pull up and do the same thing. I don't think this is a race thing, it's just a bad unethical hunter thing. And your right. If we the good ethical hunters don't do something about it none of will be hunting in the future.

Well well...Interesting thread. You have all missed one major point in all of this. This SOB was poaching.....Maybe not poaching in the "literal" sense of the word, but poaching none the less. It takes a piece of @$#@ to do something like that. I don't care if he's black, red, brown, white, orange or green. This person(s) needs to be charged with the fullest extent of the law.

Nuke, you did the right thing by reporting it. This person should not get away with this.

Please update us on what's happeing with it. I would be calling the F & W Officer that you reported this too and make sure that it's followed up on. IF they end up getting off for whatever reason, please let me know and I will take all of the facts and put a great story in the papers about this as well as include it on the BowZone here.

I do not support crap like that and will go to all lengths to help prosecute the perp.

Yes Sniper and Jackel non natives do poach and shoot out of season animals and leave them lay. But theres a big difference if caught they would be charged ! For sure not a native and probley not a Metis ! In Oct. i was glassing a cut block watching 6 mullie does up drivies an old ford pickup 3 natives jump out start shooting nock down three grad the closest one and leave. Had my digital camera got a picture of there licence no. Co . says there local its a waste of time and money to lay charges. O and if i took one of the 2 does thy left i would be charged. If you think this is an icelated case think again. This is by no means racist its fact !

This is terrible....

I am a Metis and have recently explored all my options and one thing I can say is this:

First this is Poaching just as Warden mentioned.

Second, if he is infact charges he can have his Metis Status revoked if he is convicted. I have talked to the folks at the Metis office about this and there not gonna tolerate anything.

This is a specific case and to see this happen is terrible, regardless of race/nationality.

Lets hope this SOB gets the book thrown at him and all his Metis status revoked!

Hello All..
Although I am not visibly native I to have Metis Status and am very proud of my heritage. I have been hunting for many years now, and hunting ethically as most of us serious hunters do. Now on Oct. 1st, I was given the right to hunt for sustenance. That does not mean that I instantly turned into a poacher. I spent 40 days in the bush this fall, with all the tags the government allowed me before I got status; I could have shot 7 deer, 1 moose, 1 elk, 2 bears, 1 sheep, wolf, coyote, and numerous chickens .. I shot 1 bear out of self-defense, believe it or not that was late November. and I shot 2 deer 1 doe 1 buck.. I saw hundreds.. but 100 won't fit in my freezer. It is unfortunate that some people feel the need to abuse the rights they are given, but please don't put us all in the same pot. As far as the Metis go lets not forget that this is not necessarily a forever thing. The agreement signed was an interment agreement, and in a year could (however unlikely) be overturned. As for this particular fellow, wasting meat, that is the one charge that F & W is not afraid of charging natives with. So it is quite likely this guy will be nailed for it.

The biggest reason natives seem to be free to break certain laws, is that F & W looks at it like this.. If they catch a Native hunting in a park let’s say. Is it better to kick him out of the park, and give him a warning, or charge him with an offence that he can take to court, and possibly get off with .. Thus setting a precedence that every native has the right to hunt the park...
It's a crappy situation, and because of it they have to tread waters carefully, and pick the fights they know they can win.

Bad People come in every shape and size, every color and creed. A couple years ago, on the last day of the season, I came across 3 dead moose in a logging slash. all had been gutted, and propped open with sticks to cool properly. As I was leaving the slash a couple hours later I ran into four men on three sleds, they had come into drag the moose out, there was not a tag on any of the moose, when I stopped two of the fellows to chat, one got very violent to the point that I thought I may have to use my rifle to protect myself, he had my friend bent over a sled ready to strike him.
In the end, we ripped out of the slash, only to find another three men waiting at a truck by the road. 7 men all together, I later found out they where all from lloydminister. Not one was native..

opps sorry I rambled on..
Thanks for letting me add my two cents..

I don't doubt that there are a-holes of all kids out there... The thing that bugs me most about this whole thing is that here is another group of people (native has nothing too do with it) that are granted the rite too hunt when ever and what ever with the tags they are given.... Now I have been hunting for about 18 years and bought a billion tags paid my way and put in my draws and waited for them to get drawn..... It takes me about 3-5 years too get a moose tag fine but now what happens due too this new rule is that wait going too take 6,7,8 years????? Am I only going too be able too take 3 more moose in the rest of my hunting days???? where the folks with the RITES get too take 1,2,3/year???? I am not familiar with the rules so if I am off on them getting 3/year I am sorry but forgive me if I am a lil on edge when it comes too this topic...

I the native folks want too hunt year round on there reserves and such I have no problem with that but it seems too me that it's going too really put a damper on the draw system and make the people that Pay for there rite too hunt in a tough spot.... Just my opinion.... Thanks..

Top Dawg..

For years I felt the same was as you do about the Native rights, and in fact still do . I must confess though that I do enjoy my newly given rights, yet I am not about to abuse them.
You are right about there being no limits on moose or any other non restircted animal, the only thing that native hunters need is a valid status card, and picture i.d. All we can hope for is that the guys that have just recieved thier rights to hunt with Metis status, don't soon forget how they felt previous to Oct. 1st.
I draw for moose with a group of friends, if we don't get drawn we don't go, I can't see myself taking off to our secret spot by myself, what fun would that be. I am more about the trip than the killing, to get out with the guys for a week, stomp around the bush.. act like an a$$ in camp, have some laughs, and make up stories to tell the wives, that to me is what hunting is about. If you get your animals.. it's a bonus.

What you said about the draw system may actually work the other way for awhile, with all the guys with metis cards not drawing now, you may need less priority to get your draw. I can assure you that the number of metis that hunt will be much lower than you would think (an example of this is that in my entire family in Alberta (metis side that is) only Myself and one nephew hunt.. that is 2, out of approx 30 carded metis)

Your concerns are very valid, let's hope that it never gets to that point.

Randy

I too am pissed about some people having the right to kill as mush game as they want. No way should anybody have that right. This is the way it would be if I was running the show. The Native and Metis people could hunt and kill all they wanted as long as they did it the way they did when the treaty was signed way back when. If the Native and Metis people are so hell bent over heritage and tradition why dont they hunt in the traditional way of their people? By this I mean make their own weapons and hunt with them. If tradition means so much I cant understand why they want to use the white man's modern day weapons. If you are a Native then act like one, If you want to be like the white man then go by the white man rules. I wouldn't have a problem with someone going out and shooting something if they really needed it to eat. In this modern day I dont think there are to many people that really have to kill an animal to survive. Besides hunting costs alot of money these days and I am sure that wild game ends up costing more than you could buy domestic meat for. A man that would have to rely on wild game to survive would not waste it or abuse it. Giving people special rights such as this opens up the door for all kinds of abuse. I know not all Native and Metis people abuse this right but it doesn't take that many outlaws that can kill all year to do some serious harm. Anybody that can hunt can get more than enough game for his families needs through the tags that are issued in Alberta. There doesn't need to be special rights. This system is not right and it will ruin the hunting for everyone Native or otherwise. It is not the Native or the Metis people I have it in for, If the whiteman was givin this right I would feel the same way because I know it would be abused just the same. I dont care if you are black white yellow native middleeastern or from mars you are a man to me. I have nothing personal against the Native people of this land , hell my first love was a Native girl. I spent many a night with the Native people helping them tend their fishing nets along the Saint John River in NB when I was a younger man. So dont any of you cats accuse me of being racist against the native people. However I dont like it when someone is stepping on my toes and theatening to change my family traditions. So yes I am pissed about the special hunting rights my native brothers have, it is hurting us all Native and non Native, You natives have become to much like us whitemen, where has your pride and tradition gone, put down the guns and act like your fathers before you , do your people proud. Oh and also I am pissed at the government for their stupid ideas and all you white guys that are poachers pretending to be hunters. Gimmee a freaking break, smartin up people!!

this topic i guess has stepped on some toes but some natives and whitemen alike have taken hunting to an extreme by poaching . I for one now quite a few natives and metis who hunt the same seasons as the whiteman just to avoid the problems of being accused of poaching they dont pay for their tags and have taken hunters ed so these are the responsible ones i know. I third some of sir huntsalot's coments about their treaty rights it should be done the way their forefathers sighned the treaty bow and arrow, spears muzzle loaders whatever way the had to before, no gill nets that go unchecked for days at a time, no high powered riffle. as our governments get more laxed on stuff that matters to the people and spend billions on stupid S$% how can we change things that have been screwed up for so long

just my. 02

Well then Far beit for me to stay out of a good conversation about a "hot topic"

Dawg ...yer first post kinda botherd me as I have read stories in Alberta Game Warden Magazine about a sting operation up north a few years back that charged alot of Native hunters for poaching, waste of flesh, selling flesh etc..... Dont get me me wrong I am as politcally correct as that hole we all dig to S#!T in .... Nukes story pissed me off as I live close to the area in question .... But in my line of work I have seen all sorts of people come have a stay at my hotel for that very reason .... Caucations, Afro-decents, Asians, Natives, Middle Eastern, South Pacific etc.....
Alot of Inn Keepers here are hunters just like us and those people really piss them off ....I get informed in causual conversation of course...then I get pissed too .... My Daughter is 1 year old ... is she ever gonna get a chance to choose to hunt in 12 or 13 years ... I dont know and that worries me ...its because of poachers in general that our way of life is in danger ....... and all hunters unfourtunatly seem to get painted with same brush ....... Gotta love that 5% A$$hole Factor eh!

*ps* Sorry for the rant ..... its a subject near and dear to my heart as I am sure it is with everyone here

here is a link to the Alberta Game Warden assoc. that publishes a quarterly magizine ...... I really like the Notebook section that informs of succesfull charges laid ......
