View Full Version : Busted! What next?
Here's a theoretical scenario, you just get in your in stand, it's early and a deer busts ya havin' a wheezin' hissy fit. What do you do next?

I would let that deer sit for a while and go hunt some of my other spots. It seems to me that the more you educate deer to human activity the "smarter" they get. Just as we pattern them, they pattern us. We have to make ourselves hard to pattern.

A multitude of two word phrases:
"rubber blunt"
"sling shot"
"fall asleep"
"swear loudly"
Don't know for sure - the ones that usually bust me don't hang around long. I'm gonna have to carry my sling shot and bag of marbles though....

I am just reading Barry Wensel's book The Crooked Hat Chronicles and he recommends wheezing the buck back in.

Stick around - I've headed to stand and spooked up deer who came out into the field early and then waited on stand only to see them come right back out again an hour later.

ive found deer to be deceptively forgiving so long as you give them time, and hide your sent. if they cant hear you, smell you or see you why would the fear you....but i swear whitetails can hear my heartbeat.

blacktail buck I shot busted me. I still hunt in thick steep mountains. Was following a set of tracks over a bluff when I realized I was start to get upwind of a ridge I wanted to hunt along so I turned back. Just coming over the bluffs a deer blew at me. I started moving to get down wind of it, can called and he stopped long enough for me to get a look at him. Just as I was going try a shot he blew again and started moving again. Thinking a can call wouldnt stop him again I hit my rattling bag. He stopped immediately and gave me the shot I needed.

I'd rather stay in the stand,....and wait and see what happens...
I always wait after I get busted some times they come back. My best deer to date busted me but did not get my wind, he circled around to try and get down wind this gave me my opportunity.

I would wait, you just never know, they may have busted you or something spooked him and he may not be sure what it was, he may come back to take a look later.

Stick it out especialy if you hunt a rural populated area they are used to smelling human scent one of my stands is about 25 yards away from a neighbors storage area. and I have had deer snort run off about 100 yds then settle down and switch trails and follow it back to my stand area.

Stick it out for sure - as someone else said if they can't see, hear or smell you they wont be scared to come back. Deer are pretty curious animals from my experience.

First thing that I would do is try to figure why I got busted. If it was sound or movement, I am not too worried about it. If it's a case of the wind current something unexpected I would probably reconsider my setup.

if you have never been busted then you are hunting with a rifle....LOL
Wait it out. Been busted a few times by old does that seem to pick up anything that's out of place. Often had other deer come by the stand not long after.

Get in your stand and wait. I've had this happen a few times and still been successful later in the afternoon.
