Hello
I'm looking for my first bow, and I have heard that women's bows should have a shorter draw length? Do you have any advice for a woman's first bow-I am looking to train this winter/spring for my first bow hunt next september. I don't want to spend a fortune, maybe a basic PSE bow? Is 40-50 pounds sufficient for larger game?
I can't resist all those deer I see in september here in the Edmonton archery area! There are some very sweet spots I could set up a stand/blind, not to mention all the moose I keep running into while hunting birds.
Cheers!

First, the only way to determine your draw length correclty is to go into your nearest pro-shop and have it measured. Some women do have longer draw lengths and you need to determine what your draw legth actually is.

Entry level PSE bows such as the Deer Hunter are definately capable of taking deer sized game and even larger animals. With a good cut on impact broadhead and by limiting your shots to 30 yards, 40 pounds is definately enough for deer sized game.

If Moose are something you are really interested in hunting I would look at the NOVA or Spyder (depending on your draw length) with rimfire cam to increase arrow velocity and kinetic energy.

No matter what brand of bow you are looking at find one who's grip in comfortable in your hand. All the major bow makers are producing excellent products. Some women also find many bows are to heavy to hold for long periods of time when they are fully outfitted. A womens or youth bow may be the way to go depending on what you are comfortable with.

There's a couple of short draw length bows out there right now
The Mathews Mustang is pretty good
The new hoyt Turbo-Tec is also pretty good.

Through trials & many dollars later...I finally found the bow I love.

I started of with a older used Hoyt...found it really heavy...after20-30 shots when practicing..I could barley hold it up anymore. My next bow was the PSE Spyder..I like this bow for 3D shoots & league shooting but I don't feel confident out in the field hunting with it.I don't think it has the punch needed to take down a deer or moose, even tho I have it cranked.
I finally purchased a Hoyt Sierra Tech XT 2000 & absoultuly love it! It has such a smooth draw...I could pull it all day.I feel much more confident with it..I actually took down a 650Lbs cow moose with it this fall.
I love the way it feels in my hand.
I also have a Alpine love that one too. There are many choices out there I suggest if your local pro shop has a shooting range to try a few before buying..not just a couple of shots..many...

Good luck in your search
Let us know what you decide.

There are quite a few youth bow allow you to adjust draw length and weight, some can go up from 40 lb to 50 lb with some help form pro shop, they can reduce the draw weigh to 35 lb for you to practise. What you need to do is to get a good conditon used bow and have they set up for you. If you are interest to bow hunt in the future, save up a little for a good release help a lot. A good used youth bow won't cost you an arm or leg to start with. Look if yo can find a Diamond edge, very good youth bow for a little.

Diamond released a razor Edge that can go from 30-60 lbs and has over 10" draw lenght adjustment. There nuclear ice even lighter as for the draw weight can go.
