Hi all. I was just wondering what everyones opinion on the proposed pit bull ban in Ontario is.
I personally am very offended that the government has taken it upon itself to ban a breed of dog based on the actions of a few dogs that are owned by very irresponsible owners.
I feel that everyone should be held accountable for their own dogs and that banning a breed is discrimanatory and unnecessary.
I don't own any pits myself, and I have no desire to own one, but I feel that if you want to own one you should have the right to do so.
We do live in a free country don't we?
Rant over- any one else have any thoughts on this?

well guys and gals, this is a very touchy subject for me. i have a male unneutered purebed pit myself and he is the most gentle funloving dog i have ever seen. i have two children one is three and the other is 4 months and i tell ya he is sooo good with the girlss. i keep saying its all in how you bring one up. if they are brought up properly, they are the best family dogs around. ANY dog can be dangerous if they arent brought up properly. and i think it is the stupidest thing to ban one breed in particular. the only reason you hear about dog attacks that might be pitbull is because they get peoples attention and that there is so many misconceptions about the breed. I have an article about dog attacks in canada last year and of all the dog attacks only 2% were pitbull (or a half breed coon hound) that may look like a pitbull. the most common attacks were by small breed like pom's, poodles, e.t.c. you dont here about those ones because they are not pitbulls and they wont get big media hype. i dunno everyone is entitled to an opinion but all i know is that i trust my dog completely, and he is a fantastic dog because i spend the time with him, train him, and let him know that he is a member of this family. and i think more people who own these magnificent dogs should do the same. 8)

I can honestly say that it would be a sad day that any one breed be singled out like that. If we are going to ban a dog breed that maybe dangerous then we should ban all dogs all together. I have a male Rottweiler that is not neutered and like said previously he is the most respectful loving caring dog in the world. We always go out on walks around the area that we live in Cochrane and 100 percent of the time where there is confrontation on our walks it is the other dog that starts the problems. Most of the time being Golden retreivers believe it or not. So how do you narrow one type of dog out...... YOU DONT. Put the owners in jail cause it is thier fault. Dont ban a dog, Ban the people that are not able to care for a dog.

To single out a breed shows a lack of understanding of dog psychology and training. Any dog can be vicious if not raised right. Dogs are pack animals, your family is his pack. The pack has rules about behavior, including how to greet strangers and when the teeth can come out. I own a one year old Great Dane, a common guard and attack breed. But like your dogs, she's a family dog, and a big softy despite her high energy level and great strength. We've gone to great pains to socialize her, by taking her to all the kids' outdoor sporting events, having a routine that my wife's private music students go thru when they walk in the door (good behavior [sit-stay] gets her a treat from the student), and so on. Raising a dog requires responsibility and a consistant program of right and wrong, just like your kids. Now compare how many dog attacks occurred versus how may human-on-human attacks occurred, and that will tell you which species is the problem.
Best,
John
