Hi guys,
I haven't shot a bow since High School in Missouri. I've always wanted to bow hunt, and I'm starting to think about about eventually doing it in the next couple years.
I'm stuck in the city (Montreal) for now. Any advice on buying a first bow, practicing marksmanship in the city, etc.?

Hey Scipco,
Try and find an archery shop thats into archery and bowhunting, not your money.
I don,t recomend Wholesales sports or Canadian tire for archery, they just don't seem to carry anyone on staff who knows anything.
As for marksmanship, once you've got a bow that fits you, If you can hit a Tim hortons cup lid at 20 Yrds 3 out of 3 times you'd be ready for hunting, sort of.
If you got the desire and love of the outdoors you will love Bowhunting.
Good luck to you and welcome to Bowzone.

Welcome to The BowZone Scipio! Sniper is dead on the money. Make sure you find an archery proshop that is interested in your "archery wellbeing" not your $$. There's a distict difference.
Make sure that the proshop that you go to fits you to your bow...not just measuring your draw length and sending you on your way. Also, make sure you shoot a bunch of different bows so you find the one that fits you properly and one that you like shooting.
Welcome back to archery!

Archery opinions are like buttholes. Everybody has one so just take it all in and decide what is best for you, most people won't steer you wrong. Just ask. A good pro shop is hard to beat, they like to get all the after sales so they should treat you right

Thanks guys! Sounds similar to getting into/buying gear for climbing or caving. Buyer be ware :?
Is it actually POSSIBLE to practice archery marksmanship while living in a large metro area like Montreal? I see all you fellows are out the the free open spaces of the world, not penned up like me! Any idea if I'll have any luck finding an archery range that is not way out on the periphery of the city?
I'm a postdoc student with no car. Its nice being able to walk to everything, but I miss the wide open spaces :|
Thanks agan guys!

one thing you might want to consider is finding an archery club in your area, most clubs have some sort of league shoot, league shoots are a good way to get alot of help and advice on shooting and equipment,
as well as the practice you need, ask around at some of the pro shops the will have a list of clubs in your area
I will see if I can find a list for you

Some shops will also have ranges as well. Try your University to see if there is a club there. Here is a link to Quebec archery clubs
