After mounting hundreds of deer heads I can say that no two deer look alike. If you get to looking at them they really vary widely in colour hair patterns and bone stucture. They probably look as different to themselves as people do to us. I know alot of people think that they get grey when they are old but I have seen year old bucks that are very grey in the face. The colour mix in an area can be from reddish brown to grey and everything in between. Living in the east and now living in Alberta I have noticed that as a rule the deer out west are much more grey in colour than there eastern cousins. I think the colour varies some according to geographic location but it also varies within the heard. I have mounted deer that were absolutely beautiful and some that were just plain ugly. I shot a big 5x4 one fall back east that had to be the ugliest deer I ever saw. I mounted it and it just did not look nice, It was all grey in colour and didn't have much white on the face, just a real dull colour overall and it was only a 3 1/2 year old buck. You can mount 2 deer the same way on the same form and one will look great and the other just doesn't have it and it is because of the hair colour and patterns.
