Hi I'm new here.
I'm looking for some info on hunting in Canada. My wife's cousin's husband recently took a job in Fort McMurry, Alberta. He has invited me to join him on a fish/hunting trip when we can manage it. I am a bowhunter (no guns) only and I am an IBEP instructor. What do I need to know about coming to Canada to bowhunt? Does Canada require any proficiency testing? I mainly shoot recurves but have a Mathews Monster 6 also.
What can you tell me?
Thank you in advance.

Basically you can hunt with your relative once every three years under the Hunter Host provision (once they become a resident of Alberta). As a resident, your relative will be able to host you once every three years (he will be able to host 2 people actually). I have posted the link to the regulations that will help you. Have him go chat with one of the eople at the local fish and wildlife office and they will be happy to explain the process. He will have to start the process a couple months before the season starts and swear that he is not hosting you for any sort of financial gain. Anyway, its a pretty simple process and I host a friend from Utah every three years. You will only need to prove that you are capable of hunting and have passed some sort of hunting course (usually a hunter number from your state will be sufficient). You can bring your bow across the border without any issues but you will have to get a temporary gun registration if you decide to bring one. Good luck.
