I know this is a bowhunting forum so I am sorry if I offend anyone.
I just purchased my first rifle an I am having problems sighting it in. It was a package rifle that came with the scope. The scope is a 8 point Simmons and a Savage 270 rifle. I have had 3 people try to sight in this rifle also and cannot seem to get solid groupings at 100 yards. One of the shooters was a law enforcement marksmen. Could the scope be faulty?
I need some input and thoughts from all rifle hunters please. It is appreciated.
Thanks

I would start by pulling your scope off. Check to see if the bases are screwed on tight. Put the scope back on and make sure the rings are on tight also. Make sure that the rings to the bases are tight too. Don't know what type of rings and bases you have. Make sure that the rings to scope joint is tight also. If that doesn't work and you are not hand loading, try another type of factory ammo.
That should give you something to work with. If you do not feel comfortable doing the work, Take it back to the store that you bought it from, and watch them do the work.

I'm assuming you're using factory ammo, try some different ammo....some rifles just won't shoot well with some brands of ammo. If i shoot the Winchester Supreme ammo in my 270 I can't hit water falling out of a boat, yet if I use Federal Premiums my groups tighten right up to about 1 1/2" @ 100yds. My buddy has a 300 win mag that won't shoot worth a darn with anything but the cheapo winchester ammo. try some different brands of ammo before you do anything with the scope.
Just my opinion

Thanks for the information guys. I will check to see if the screws are tight. I know the rings are tight and the ring to base is tight but I never checked the base to rifle. I am using factory ammo. I am using winchester right know and I have already tried Federal and Remington, same thing happens with these two.

When you say it is not grouping well....is it spraying rounds all over, shooting a couple good then sending flyers or is it decent groups, but the zero is moving.......all are sypmtoms of different problems. Check and make sure everything is tight, and check to make sure the action is seated properly in the stock. It is simple enough to do.....the 2 screws on the bottom. If you are not comfortable take it back in and have the store you bought it from go over it. Savages can be very accurate rifles and you should be able to get it to shoot well with a little troubleshooting.

Yes thats what it is doing. I had a good group at 50 yards and then when I moved back to 100 there were no groups at all. They sprayed all over, some on line and others off line. I just made sure all the bolts were tight and they are. What are the odds anyway of a scope being bad?

there could be other issues to eliminate as well. Has the scope actually been boresighted (after installation?) Are you shooting freehand, or from a benchrest? Are you flinching at all or maybe the trigger weight is set to high? HAve you tried to dry-fire a few rounds at 100 yards to see if you're keeping your zero? How long are you waiting between shots to cool the barrel? How many grains are you shooting, try higher grain bullets and see what happens.

One othwer thing to check is that you have good clearance between the scope and the barrel of the gun. About 3/8" should be plenty. My dad bought a gun where the scope only had about 1/16" between it and the barrel and we couldn't get it to sight in. I use Leupold bases on my 30-06 and have no problems.
