Hello everyone have to ask what you would do if someone had shot an Elk in the shoulder and you knew the person who had made the shot .The elk runs toward you and lays down 40 yards from you .Would you finish the animal off and tag it or would you shoot it and let your friend tag it or would you hope to get your friend in for the final shot before the elk gets up and could be gone . Just a topic to discuss?????????

personnaly, i would finish the animal off. I do not think an animal should have to suffer. In my opinion, letting the elk get up and run away only to die and never be found is a waste of a good animal. I feel in this situation the only ethical thing to do would be to kill it. If your friend does not want to tag it then I would use my tag.
Just my opinion of coarse.

If the friend has the option of the second shot, he of coarse should take it.

But if you can't find your friend and the animal might get up, I would take the shot and see what If my buddy wanted to tag it or not.

I think the best thing to do is make sure the animal does not get away, In any case

In our small group you'd get a severe kick in the a$$ if you didn't put a second shot into that elk. We hunt for meat when it comes to elk and horns are a secondary bonus. In my opinion it'd be foolish to let that elk get up and walk away. As for tagging it,just get a tag on it, it doesn't matter to us who tags it just get it tagged once its down. We split all the meat up anyway so it doesn't really matter who's tag goes on it.

I never could understand people that would be upset if someone else finished off their animal. I've always had the opinion that a wounded animal should be dispatched as soon as possible. Not left because someone's ego or pride is going to be hurt because another hunter finished the job. People like that need to take a good look at why they are hunting.

If my partner was not in a position to shoot again I would finish it off. Not a big fan of letting the animal suffer any longer than it has to. Plus I would not want to risk it taking off and being lost. As for tagging it........well it would be an interesting arguement to determine who is legally responsible for tagging it. There would be strong arguements on either side of the issue, if both shots were fatal shots who is responsible for the death.....Bottom line if you are going to go up to it and check things out before your partner gets there you had better get a tag on it lest a C.O. stumble upon you without a tag on the animal.

Gumby said it all. We hunt for meat first and sport second. Once all of our freezers are full we worry about who can brag about what.

The same here , I would finish the job and give the buddy the chance to tag it. If he didnt I would and give him Half.
