So, I caught this thread over on AT. Thoughts? Discuss......

http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=107053

I have to start a PEANUT BUTTER thread!!

Anyone use PEANUT BUTTER to attract deer and other game? I have smeared it on stumps...glopped it on the ground, and burried jars to the rim, and every time they come running!!!
I know it is NOT a much of a challenge when you open a fresh jar of Super Creamy Delux and chuck it about 20 yards from your stand, but what is the difference between that and a bottle of Doe in Heat?
ANy other good ideas with Peanut butter?

I have seen that thread too. Interesting. Is it baiting though?

Thats a tough one, I would say that its baiting because its food but then again its not something the deer would eat everyday.

from the B.C. hunting regs;

BAIT - means anything, including meat, cereals, cultivated crops, restrained animal or any manufactured product or material, that may attract wildlife and includes plastic or other imitation foods, but does not include a decoy as described under these regulations.

So... is it bait?? In B.C. yes it is, and as such would not be allowed for black bears. But I cannot find any regulation dealing with baiting deer, so I would assume that means its legal here.

when it comes to the issues of baiting, it was in my mind that "baiting" was using something(food like, or scent) to lure deer in..eg) peanut butter,& apples..
now this opens the door for big discussion...
1. i cant take apples from my yard, or home to lure game in....but i can sit under or in an apple orchird to hunt????
2. 2 words....game plots!!!! where ppl grow specific grains or grasses for deer, and add diffrent chemicals to help deer grow bigger, and bigger antlers????
3. scents, that lure animals in...weither it be apple scents, or anisette...would that not be baiting too???
4. why are we allowed to bait predators..eg) bears, but not allowed other game??....i have to laugh, we lure animals in the can "hunt us"??? hmmm????

i for one find baiting UNETHICAL, when it comes to hunting. i think it makes for a lazy hunter...what happened to the challenge of the sport??? getting out there and finding the animal, not putting food out to lure them????

well enuff said ...for now! :?:

I think I am going to have some fun with deer and peanut butter this year. I am going to try several ideas. First, I am going to mix some peanut butter, and anise, and pure vanilla extract, and then put them inside the film cannisters that are grey with black caps. On the bottom of the grey cannisters I am going to get some small eyelet screws from Lowes hardward, and screw them into the bottom so that I can put some string or something through the eyelet and tie onto a tree limb. Inside the grey cannisters I am going to put the mixture, maybe half full or full, and freeze them. Then take them out when I go to the hunting places and tie them up, and do this in the summer or just fall, or what ever. Some I may even drill some holes to let the scent escape. When I leave I am going to put the lids back on in the warm weather to keep the ants off.
I am also going to try to figure a way to use peanut putter cannister buried but level with the ground. If there are any other ideas let me know and I will let everone else know how my experiment went. Who says hunting can not be fun.............Grandma Patty

what happens if the deer really like your mixture and pull the canister off the tree or where ever you hang it and ingest the canister???? this is a possibility if you are leaving them out for the season,????

another thing is in the heat, if you get hunting seasons like us here where its quite warm for september....if you leave this mixture in the heat, it will go moldy....i really cant see deer being attract to the smell of rotten peanut butter mix????

just some thoughts :!: :?: :!: :?: :!: :?:

If you look in Alberta regs it is definately baiting and illegal.

I wanted to get this from the horses mouth....so I called F & W and here's what they said.

ANY food product used to hunt is illegal! It is considered baiting.
