View Full Version : Field Archery
Why is there not more (any) field archery in Alberta? Canada Even? Everyone here liked to shoot there bows. So you take a 3d course which takes you 3 hours to shoot 21 arrows...then take a field course where in the same tiem you shoot 28 targets for a total of 112 arrrows.
I would LOVE if there were more field shoots in alberta. Think about it. 1 person could set the whole course by themselves. Once the target buts are up then targets are paper cheap...
as much as I love 3d, i could see myself giving it up to go shoot a field tournament. Just because i LOVE to shoot my bow...
I have walked the field course at Sherwood Park, AB. THAT looks liek a WICKED course!!
anyone offer any insight into why there are not any big field shoots in AB?

The latest rumor is that GP is rebuilding theirs. It would be nice to go to more of those. Sherwood Park was a good time last year at the provincials.
Sweet! Calgary Achers is haveing a skins shoot in June , should be fun.
I heard that Bighorn was builging a field range as well.
I woul dlove to get into more of those. LOTS more shooting, and since the 3d aroudn here is always done in june it would be nice to do more shotoing when it is actually nice out and not snowing....
if this May Blizzard ends before sunday i might head out to shoto dragon flights feild course, it is a nice course!!!

I think that if you advertised enough for the shoots that you could find the interest. And the ranges are certainly out there. The problem is that no one (myself included) really wants to organize a field shoot. The set up and registration is usually easy enough, it is ordering the right targets and making sure that all the right pegs are set out and distances marked that deters most people. I have organized shoots before and my dad used to run the calgary archers target shoots, and it is always a lot more fun (and easier) just to shoot them. That being said if anyone wants to hold a field shoot I would be willing to help out and come shoot.
Cheers,
Mike

Yep, Field is the greatest form of archery IMHO. Best of both worlds, you shoot in the woods like 3D but shoot at a known target. We have a great FITA Field course near Halifax that was used for the Nationals this year. I wish more guys that shoot 3D would come out and try it. They sure would see their 3D scores go up if they did. It makes for a great warm up for the 3D Nationals also. Just practice judging the distances like you do for 3D then look at the peg and see how far you're were off...
If attendance doesn't start to pickup at the Nationals, I can see being gone very soon. It will already be cut to 1 day next year. So if you like field, come out and shoot it are it will be gone soon.
I was in Hungary this summer shooting the FITA Field Worlds and that was a great experience. Too bad I was the only one from Canada shooting it. There you have to shoot the first day Unknown distance like 3D but you're allowed to draw, let down and adjust your sight (read what you want out of that :D ) It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. Maybe a few more will come out in 2 years time in France.

What do you use for target butte for field . and how many buttes would be needed. It costs about pretty close to 200 bucks to build a dono cono butte .
I am very interrested in starting field archery at our range.

You need 12 butts, 2 less then NFAA field. You shoot them twice to make up a full round. Our club has 24 butts but that's because that's the requirement for Nationals. Also the Distances are less the max shot is 60 Meters vs 80 yards (73Meters). Also you don't have to worry about walkups and fans, no such thing in FITA Field.
Butts can be made of many materials. Here we use Tentess(sp) or Donacona Board is also the name I think. I've seen them made in the States out of a box made with lumber covered with chicken wires and filled with rags. You glue the faces to cardboard so they last longer that way. I've also seen Round Whitetail butts use for temporary courses and in Europe they use "Eleven" butts they are just awesome to shoot in and arrows pull out like Rinehart 3D targets.
Heres a link from FITA on how to build a course: http://archery.org/UserFiles/Document/FITA%20website/07%20Publications/02_Downloads/Field_Organizers_Manual-e.pdf
Heres a link to how to shoot FITA Field but don't worry about the unmark portion since we don't shoot this in Canada but you would at the Worlds like I did this summer. http://archery.org/UserFiles/Document/FITA%20website/07%20Publications/02_Downloads/Field_Guidelines-e.pdf
Check out the videos from our club near halifax one was done before the Nationals and shows the whole course and the other is a slide show from Nationals.

Also their is a World Ranking Website for field. Starting now any FITA field tourneys done in Canada under FITA rules, registered with FCA or not can count towards World Ranking. There will be an announcement soon on Archery Canada website about this. I just haven't had time to type up what I want in the announcement.
Here's the link to the website: http://www.archeryranking.org/ (Click on ranking per country then select Canada to see how everyone rank in Canada compare to the rest of the world)
If anyone needs help to start shooting field or to build a course, I'm always available to provide tips and advice, but send me an e-mail at: claudelanglois@eastlink.ca since I don't always come here but check my e-mails daily.
So we have 12 months to build a momentum for next years Field Nationals in Regina, lets do it...
CHeers,
What? No more walk ups or fans? That kinda sucks.

Russ, this is for FITA field. NFAA field still has walkups and fans. FITA got rid of these quite a few years back from what I hear(before my time I'm trying to say LOL)
Cheers,
Interesting, we still shot fans & walks-ups last year @ Sherwood Park for provincials.

A little behind on the rules I think but at least your shooting it. Better then half the country that doesn't have any course at all.
We have to change that. Anyone with ideas?

I know there's a few in or around the Montreal area here in QC, but they're rare compared to the exclusively indoor ones. :(

I would sure like to set up a course and with the declining numbers in 3d i think it would be good for archery . But i would have to find a way to make a more cost effective butte then dono-cono .
