Anybody hunt wmu 404

Im plannin a 3 day hike in hunt and was wonderin if anybody has done much huntin in the area. done some scounting and have seen lots of sign in the area. elk mostly.

I used to hunt 404,mostly for sheep,but have taken a couple good mule deer bucks out of there.Used to hunt west of longview just inside the forestry boundry and then across the Highwood river.Zephyer Creek I think it was called,then we'd swing up into Painted Canyon (named for the Blackfeet Indian pictographs on the canyon walls)Lots of sheep used to be in there,don't know what it's like now.

thanks im gonna go up and check out zephyr creek and see if i can get into sheep.

If you go into Zephyr,go all the way into the back,about 4 + miles.There's an old horse trail goes in.You'll come out of the bottom about 3/4 of the way in and it opens up to nothing but grass.If you have a spotting scope you will be able to glass the grass from there and save alot of leg work.If you do go all the way back there's a saddle between the two ridges and there's a lick right there.After that it gets real steep,straight up and down both ways :lol: .Over the years we have taken about a half dozen sheep out of there,one was a Booner that my friend shot on the last day of the season.

P.S. look for mule deer on the south facing slopes,they lay on them all day and there are some good ones.
