I didn't start getting bigger deer untill i realized that you have to do as much work before the hunting season as during.

Pre season spotting is key to getting larger animals. And getting your stands or blinds in the right spot will increase your success.

Throw a compass and a flashlight in your day pack. They're light and easy to carry but you never know when you'll need them.

Speaking of things to throw in your pack, how about a roll of toilet paper. Those dry fall leaves just downright hurt!

Here's a few from our contests. I will get to most of them today sometime.

Don't shoot until you can see the whites of their eyes

Always be sure to check your tree steps while you are going up the tree. I have found them loose on occasion after use.

store your hunting clothes in a Rubbermaid container to keep them scent free.

Ensure you dress warm enough for the weather and the duration of time you intend to spend in the field. Nothing is worse then having to move around to keep warm and spooking that big buck you've been waiting for. I know, I've done it.

To tell wind direction when hard to discern, tie about a 2-3" piece of sting to the bottom of your bow sight.

Keep dental floss in your hunting pack. It comes in handy for every thing from tying your peep sight in place and other temporary equipment repairs.

Use gun blue to dull bright parts

For a cheap broadhead target use a large bag of peat moss.
They are any where from $5 - $8 and will stop the fastest arrows around with 2 finger removal. After the bag gets cut up real bad you can duct tape it up spread it on the gardens and buy a new bag.

Be sure you know how people hunt along with what there hunting ethics are prior to going hunting with them no matter how well you know them.

A week or two prior to hunting season be sure to visit the places you plan to hunt (this is in addition to regular scouting) check the travel route to be sure there are no new obstacles such as fallen trees or swollen rivers. Time how long it takes to get there from where you plan to hunt to where you plan to set a stand or begin a push. Get up early for a few days prior to when you hunt to be sure you know when there will be enough light for you to move into position in the dark. With this information you can better plan your mornings to be sure you are properly positioned on opening day and not wasting hunting time traveling to your spot.

When skinning an animal make a small slit in the skin and then cut from the inside so as to cut aminimal amount of hair as hair will dull your knife very quickly.

Change your socks twice a day

When getting close to the herd bull while elk hunting I find one of the ways to bring him in is to cow call and not bugle. This usually works into fooling him that his cows are leaving him.

More of a survival tip ..... when lost in woods ... you can always tell north by finding a tree with moss .... it grows on the north side of tree ..... you can always start a fire with the dry tinder found under the overgrowth on evergreen trees

always keep some sort of sharpener even when your out hunting. broadheads will lose their edge in the quiver when in there gfor long periods of time and keeping an accusharp or some type of sharpener even a number 6 bastard file will help you out even in the field. a sharp broadhead and a well placed shot will mean more food in the freezer and another trophy for the camera.

to keep hunting knives from rusting coat and wipe down with
pam or cooking spray

When using hunting scents, utilize a scent that resembles the area that you're hunting. An apple scent may work if you're near an orchard but would be foreign in the pine woods. If you're meat hunting, (open to taking does or for the freezer) utilize a natural cover scent, rather than a deer urine scent. Does will sometimes spook away from some urine scents, but will approach your stand if using an earth scent.

Make sure you carry a spray bottle of HYDROGEN PEROXIDE in your safety kit. Not only you can use it for cleaning a wound caused when cleaning a animal but also for finding the blood trail of the animal. If you spray it on what you believe is blood on leaves and it foames up you will know you are on the trail. Happy hunting and be safe.

Esbit stoves are a great for those deep bush trips. The stove folds up to the size of a pack of smokes and the fuel tabs will fit inside. The stove can boil about 1 liter of water in 10-15 minutes. Most people store the stove & fuel tabs inside of the a steel water container or pot. The pot is used to hold the water while it's being boiled.

when setting up a free standing tower, If its near a water source, be careful not to set up too close. had experience of animals seeing movement in the water reflecting and spooking!!

When out hunting always carry a flashlight. If nothing else it will help you track a wounded animal as blood will show up better in lowlight the blood will stand out in the leaves/grass with a flashlight. GOODLUCK and please have FUN hunting.

a good scouting tip is to get off the coach and start scouting those game trails spring is perfect all the winter trails go back to all there bedding areas and with any luck you will find a shed or two of the buck you seen or missed and be able to get a score off the shed to no what size of a buck your after to let him go or bow him for a book buck. good luck and good eating in this years hunting.
Take an old blanket with you the next time you are hunting out of a ground blind and lay on the floor it will lessen the crunching noise of leaves and twigs.

I always phone to get permission to hunt on private land. Most people will be quite eager to help if you talk to them personally

Use a topographic map of the area you plan to hunt to view trails and roads in the area, possible funnel areas, potential buck bedding areas, and water sources. Scout those areas before the season begins so that you know what to expect and where to look for game.

Scent control; I have been busted a few times by a couple of deer. Now before going out I shower and use a no scent deodorant. I have also used a cover scent with good success. My boots are rubber and I usually try to walk through a ditch with water to help wash off any human scent. If you are in any doubt of odor, you probably will loose. You can't be too careful.

Make sure you have a kill shot don't take shots that are quartering towards you, you will not double lung him and he will go a long way. If unsure of your shot don't take it, you will get another chance.

:P The hydrogen peroxide works great but it needs to be in a dark container. It is even good the next day as long as it does not rain.
Also I have used turkey calls to calm deer down, thinking turkeys are in the area then it is safe. Not decoys though they seem to know they are fake, but they have a hard time telling that deer decoys are not real. A buck with a doe decoy works great and keeps the does away, from busting you. This is what I have found while hunting. Grandma Patty

A good sized container(I carry a pound) of fine grind black pepper will help keep bugs and other critters off your kill if you have to pack it out in quarters.
A short barrelled, pistol grip 12Ga. pump is the best bear repellant you can buy.

foodsaver bags are second to none when it comes to storing and keeping your camo scent free.

if your a release shooter packing an extra will save your butt sooner or later.

don`t start changing equipment a month before your season starts.

always tell someone wear your hunting.

a few pounds of survival gear and a bag of trail mix could be the difference between life and death even if your on a day hunt in your home area.

the 4th one is probably the most important on my list, I had a buddy break his femur about 1/2 mile into the woods from his own backyard and if I wasn`t scouting his area he probably wouldn`t have survived.

Fire three evenly spaced shots in the air if you get lost.....this doesn't seem to work as good during archery season though...
