Hi, my name is Jon, I just registered to this site. I have several questions(hopefully I can get them answered :o )

1) Is there any legal issues about owning a bow in Canada(eg. permits required, etc.)
2) Is there any decent online sites that sell cheap / crappy practice bows? (or anywhere near Markham / Toronto)
3) Any shooting techniques with a bow would be appreciated

Thanks :)

And... heres some info about me:
I'm 16 years of age at the moment, I was born in Toronto, grew up in Michigan and currently reside in the town of Markham. Since a few years ago, I have become interested in learning to wield any weapons that are not considered firearms. I am very experienced in melee combat using a Sword, Staff, or my bare hands. Recently I have decided to try my hand at archery, I'm trying to find a cheap bow(those plain ones you get when you're just trying the sport, basically a string and a bendable material) to get the feel of it.

How I define cheap- Anything under/around $100-ish

If I get into the sport, I might end up spending hundreds of dollars on a bow

My sword- 36" black technowootz damascus steel katana-$4000
My staff- Long(I never measured it, approximately 2x the length of my sword) cast iron reinforced hardwood Jo-$120

I'm still in school, however I do still work during the summer and during school as well. Unfortunately for me, my parents don't support my recent "investment"(lol?) so it seems I'm choked on $ for a bow at the time being.

Thanks for reading this un-neccisarily long post.
Best regards

Hey Jon...Welcome to the bowzone!!

I don't have time to answer all your questions but someone here will know.

If they haven't answered them before the pro-staff and myself get back from the Nationals in Prince George...I will answer them then.

Hi Jon welcome to Bowzone!! I will try to answer a few of your questions.
1.) No you don't need any special permits. You just need good common sense when it comes to shooting your bow. A local archery shop should be able to tell you about local clubs that offer instruction and many have equipment for your to try the sport of archery for the first time.

2.) There are some bows for sale on www.ehunt.ca as well as www.archerytalk.com . You should go to a pro shop to have your draw length measured, if you would like to shoot a compund bow. It sounds from your intrest in more primitive weapons that you maybe interested in shooting a long bow which for lack of a better description ( and I know our long bow shooters will kill me for this) looks like just a stick and a string. I don't really like the term weapon attached to bows or guns for that matter as it give a negitive conatation for the anti-hunters, but that is just me.

3.) For shooting techniques find a club to try the gear out they will give you enough help with basic technique and saftey to get you started.

If you have more questions just ask there are lots of top notch archers here to help.
