Hello everyone just posting to see what is everyones effective shooting range on a live animal . I know most bowhunters have shot at game well over there effective range ( myself included ) so please dont come down on other shooters who have shot to far . I just want this post to maybe help some hunters let that monster animal walk away if he is to far for there effective range. With that said my effective range would be that I feel I could make a clean harvest ate 40 yards . I know I can shoot farther but any farther than 40 things can start to get a little shaky.

I have felt comfortable out to about 70 yrds with my pins, and my broadhead set up.
But I do agree, I feel really solid out 40 yrds, for a good clean harvest with no problems.

For deer sized animals, I am confident out to 40 yards. I wouldn't hesitate to take a 60 yard crack at a moose if I had time to range him so that I KNEW he was 60 yards. Moose just don't seem to "jump the string" like a deer, plus at 60 yards he wouldn't even hear my deadly Phantom strike!
On the other hand, I have missed a nice buck at 25 yards because I thought he was 40 yards.
Some days I bet my effective range is 10 yards and that's only if I guess the yardage right.

It is not so much my effective range but range estimation. I hate those over and under shots. I feel comfortable shooting out to 35 yards at island deer. One day maybe a range finder will make it into my hunting pack.
Closer you are I find is more challenging. I love getting in close for my shots, this is best part of bowhunting.

My maximum effective range with my bow is 45 yards. I will really have to think about taking a shot over that.

You'd be hard pressed to get a shot much farther than about 30 yards in the places I hunt. I like to get close as possible to the game I hunt, so I would guess my effective maximum range would be about 30 yards. I practice, and shoot, much farther than my effective range, out to about 50 yards, to make those close in shots almost a gimme. Just my two cents. Be safe.

before I was only comfortable out to 40 yards with my reflex excursion, its a whole new ballgame with my xtec though, if i`m on a hunt that I paid alot of money for ( us yankees are mandated to go on a guided hunt in canada) and its the getting close to going home I wouldn`t hesitate to take an animal at 50-60 yards now. a range finder is mandatory hunting gear for me.
